From the pros here, is it safe to say that with my stats being 338 Gathering with food I should be able to land this fish? Asking because I can mooch a Smelt and get the big fish sound from the reel no problem, but then I get a note telling me my gathering is insufficient to land the catch. Done this at the ice hole, latrines, and the one small pond south of Whitebrim if that helps rule out that maybe I’m landing something different entirely and just need to keep pushing.

its somewhat tricky bc of the mooch. but i on average get one every 30-40 mins. the first one took me 2-3 hours to get tho! maybe ur just havin bad luck like i was at first. dont need full melds, its a one star fish. perception food is nice tho so you can get more chances at hqing the smelt so u can mooch. and hq emperors are nice for the quality boost obviously

I tested this out on my fisher alt.

The S. baskets will catch smelts and gobys. There is no bait that isolates smelts only. Kissing trout will bite on both HQ smelts and HQ gobys. Kissers have a higher bite rate than Emps.

1 stack of bait, 11 kissers, 4 HQ kissers, 2 emps. Gear is pre 2.4 max. I didn't time it but it was well under an hour.

I did some fishing for the emperors last night using Sylkis baskets. I only ended up catching 2 within an hour timespan. Oddly enough there was another fisherman beside me catching more of them and he was using a different bait which didnt isolate the smelts as efficiently but he still ended up catching more Emperors than me.

He seemed to have a higher emperor catch rate when he did land an HQ smelt. I ended up with 8 Kissing Trouts in that hour.

This is a thing about fishing that many sadly have not learned yet. Using the highest level gear for every fish just isnt going to work. I started using my 2.3 BiS gear looking for this fish and after over an hour got nothing. Then I decided to take off most of my melded gathering gear and leave on the high perception stuff, and took off all my i70 melded accessories. It works, getting almost all smelts and very few gobys and have gotten a few emperors so far.

Its still rng and switching gear wont help, sometimes you'll catch 3 in a row and sometimes nothing in 2 hours

I'm curious as to how this works. Why does this work?

Your gathering level should have no reason to affect how many low level fish you fish up. If you can isolate the fish efficiently with bait, then that is what will affect the fish caught at that hole.

Explain to me what gathering has anything to do with that?
