Player - "Oh please, I just have the little brat that spanking he's been begging for since the first time he opened his mouth. He'll be fine, the only thing 'injured' is his pride."

Even if they died, is it so hard for them to home point and run back to where they were? Or are NPCs so special that they can't be bothered to pay some gil to teleport and do some running?

The game's death mechanic is exclusive to players. NPCs only die once, we special people who were touched by vorl- i mean, "Hydaelyn" are capable of dying and respawning.
Though no one's sure if that works with all the Scions. And it's not something you'd wanna find out the hard way.

I always thought it would be hilarious if they kind of broke the 4th wall and brought Livia back in the story like they did Nero with CT and had Cid say something like "but I saw <character> defeat you!" "They did but I returned to my home point and just got back." XD
