They really should fix this. It does get annoying.
I get that they're afraid it might hurt retainer sales, because they might think people would rather create alts for storage, but people do that already anyway even with the restriction. Besides, some people might actually be enticed to get retainers then because a retainer sub applies to multiple toons (from what I've heard).

Like all other threads on the subject, I fully support unrestricted trade between alts.
To the suggestion to use the FC chest, I had a bit of a chuckle. Even if all my alts were in the same FC, you think we have SPACE for entire gear sets?? looooooooooooool.

Shared bank (like EQ) would work too.
That could work, but for right now I think that just the ability to transfer money to your alts is the best course of action and the easiest.
I think it would help a ton as well, considering a lot of players on my server had a good bit of wealth, but they don't want the temptation of blowing it all off and some high-priced item. It'd promote players to effectively save their gil, making some, and sending the rest to an alt for safe keeping. It's what i did on XI, and by the end of a year I kept a huge tally of what I paid and made in terms of selling ancient currency from Dynamis.
it's really fun.
What? You mean you don't want to have to level to 50 in all the crafts on all your alts just to be able to make stuff to help them level?
I support this idea entirely.

I agree with this as well, this is definitely needed.

Here's how the restriction currently works:
The reason you can't send stuff to your alts is because:
1) You can only send things to people on your friends list
2) You can't send a friend request to an offline player.
3) Adding additional item slots such as a tackle box, shared retainer slots, etc. would, by SE's own admission (check the Q&A for the recent Live Letter for Yoshi's own words on the subject) bloat the character data too much at this time.
The first two are measures to prevent an ungodly amount of spam (all the games cited in this thread have horrendous mail spam problems. And fake friend requests from gold farmers are already common.) While the third is a *sigh* "PS3" limitation.
In other words, not being able to send stuff to your alts isn't a malicious design choice, but a side-effect of one of the ONLY anti-spam measures that actually works and from...the PS3. Again.
The current means at your disposal are the FC chests and friends. There have been some very subtle hints that they'll have something new for 3.0, but that's a ways off.
Basically, they're either SLOWLY working on it, or they have no plans to do it. Since this game is already far, FAR less conducive to alts than nearly every other MMO short of EVE online, I can understand why things catering to alts is very low on the priority list.

I support this. We should be able to send whatever we want to whoever we want ESPECIALLY our own chars.
You should be able to send anything to anyone whether they are online or otherwise.
So I can make a whole new char and get its full inventory space + the two free retainers that I can get with it including their full inventory space (yes as soon as you make any char the storage needed for all that is reserved for that char on the server right away whether it is full or empty it doesn't matter) for free (because my sub allows me to) but sending to my alt bloat the character data ?
I'm sorry but this is not true from SE and they are just banking on people ignorance when it comes to the technical stuff. The storage is already taken as soon as you make that alt char in full for free for your sub.
You can get the same amount of spam squarely while you are online. It doesn't matter this is just an excuse to make it not possible to befriend your own alt so you can't send stuff to yourself.
While I agree adding more inventory boxes (so extra to the existing boxes) on display at the same time could be a problem with the PS3 RAM but there are ways around it and I'm sure SE working on it to make it work. HOWEVER, that particular issue has no bearing WHATSOEVER on the ability to transfer your items between your EXISTING inventory boxes among your alt chars. So again it is banking on the people ignorance of the technical stuff to blame the inability to transfer your existing items in your existing inventory between your alt chars.
I'm sorry but the spam is not effected by who you can or cannot add to your friend list.
Think about it. Those options are more safe for RMT than actual players which make it ironic. The RMT are organized and owned by certain individuals or companies with a vast number of accounts and FCs. So it is safe for them to add other chars from other accounts as the middle person to transfer assets + it is safer for them to transfer stuff via FC chest as it is owned by them and the other members of the FC are owned by them and not random strangers that could take your stuff AND they have full access to their own FC chest. ALL of those options are hard for the real players which mostly have only one account. The current means at your disposal are the FC chests and friends. There have been some very subtle hints that they'll have something new for 3.0, but that's a ways off.

SE might thought about this whole thing as a way to annoy RMT making harder to transfer assets between alt chars but in reality it is only hurting the real players and NOT causing a dent in the RMT machine. It completely failed to annoy the RMT in any way, shape or form but it successfully caused a considerable hindrance to the real players.
SE should drop the excuses and allow the players to transfer their assets between their alt chars whether they are on the same account or not.
And while their are at it to allow us to send friend requests to our offline friends and messages to anyone without the requirement of them being on our friend list.
