Meh, the example only shows it for days, but I'd argue that, descriptively, a lot of people would have similar expectations at the month scale. Like, right now, if you said "last January," or even up to about May or so, I'd assume 2014. If, come January 2015, you said "last December," I'd probably first think you meant 2013. I'm not saying it can't mean the one that just passed, but I know I'm not the only one who wouldn't expect it to without context clues (yes, the context clues I ignored to be sarcastic and start this tangent).
As far as "letting it go," I'm just trying to have a civil (if horribly sarcastic at times) conversation to broaden my understanding if linguistics.
