It's true in the end just play what u like. But to say pld puts war to shame? no...just no. Maybe in 2.0.

For anyone new to tanking in general or new to FFXIV and learning the two available tanking classes, please do not play war like a pld. Search for war guides, talk to people who progress in final coil soon after release if you can find them in-game, look at some kill vids and watch how they are using war abilities in that content. I like playing them both and the different styles of MTing they present.

Or you're one of those people who choose to remain ignorant in order to praise on about equality between the two, while you probably main Paladin, and then only play Warrior once progression isn't the goal anymore.

Also don't get me wrong, Warriors can be good, really good, but an equally skilled Paladin is likely better, while having a much easier time than the Warrior is having. The Healers are probably having a much easier time keeping the Paladin up too.

The difference between the two are minimal, but it does not mean they are not there.

In my opinion, if a war and a pld can both tank something equally, let the warrior do it, they will probably do better.
If the warrior can not handle it (usually mitigation problems) than it's best to have the paladin step up.

I think this is a general rule that goes fairly well.

Problem is I see very few people knowing the difference between the two which causes a problem on both ends.

In the end, while there are differences, both are desired end-game, even if war seems to be misunderstood slightly.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts. I enjoy Warrior in dungeons and Paladin for endgame.

That may just be because I'm way more familiar with Paladin, though.

I chose Paladin because I've always played Paladins; for the last 30 years, since playing D&D for the first time. Heavy armor, sword and board, standing between the casters and the threats, these things are my go-to choices in any RPG.

There seem to be some serious misconception about WAR vs. PLD mitigation. WAR has just as good mitigation if not better in certain instances.

As for PLD being shown to do approximately equal damage, that was only done as off tank, i.e. Sword Oath vs. No Defiance. In tank stance, Defiance vs. Shield Oath, a WAR does a good amount more damage since they have ways to negate the damage penalty, hard hitting attacks that ignore the damage penalty, and maim can be kept up most of the time that negates most of the damage penalty.

Here is a breakdown that I did comparing the mitigation of the two tanks from another thread.

This is because of a few things.

First off the eHP provided by the two tank stances is the same.

Rampart and Inner Beast. While IB has a shorter uptime, it can be used more frequently as long as you are doing your rotations which results in approximately the same overall uptime for the two. The differences: IB does damage and has a self heal, but the big one is that they actually don't mitigate the same amount because of ShO being a base % damage reduction which means Rampart actually ends up being a 16% damage reduction while IB is still 20%. Also, as far as the difficulty of timing IB to big attacks, Infuriate + IB is available more often than Rampart so while you have to push one more button you can time it to more potential big attacks.

Sentinel and Vengeance. Sentinel with the trait says it does 40% damage reduction which actually results in a 32% damage reduction and lasts for 10 seconds and is on a CD timer of 180s. Vengeance does 30% damage reduction, does damage on being hit by physical attacks, lasts for 15s and has a 120s CD timer. So they have almost the same % damage reduction, but Vengeance does damage, lasts longer and can be used more often.

Bulwark and Foresight. This one is a bit harder to measure because of block. Bulwark can give greater burst damage reduction, but block only effects physical damage and it has a shorter duration and longer cool down. Foresight may do less reduction but it lasts longer and can be used more often. The difficult to compare elements are that block could potentially block a really nasty attack or hit, but then on the other hand since block only effects physical damage its effectiveness in magic heavy fights is greatly reduced.

Holmgang and Hallowed Ground. HG is better IMO and Holmgang could use some rework/a buff.

Thrill of Battle and Stoneskin. They function pretty much the same, the main differences being SS has a cast time but no cooldown and ToB does not have a cast time but has a cool down, ToB can stack with a SS cast by a healer. Also, with the trait ToB does 20% instead of 10%.

Convalescence. Same ability for both, but the PLD version is better due to trait.

Bloodbath. Same ability for both, but WAR version is slightly better due to trait.

Awareness. Pretty meh for either class.

Rage of Halone debuff and Storm's Path debuff. SP's damage reduced debuff is better than RoH's strength debuff since it affects all damage.

Block and Self-heals. Different flavor elements for both classes. While people like to say that the shield is a huge deal, it only works on physical attacks so is mainly effective for negating an auto attack here and there unless you use Bulwark but that ability should be looked at separately. So in most instances, they result in approximately the same amount of mitigation.

While it may seem like I am showing that WAR mitigation is better, it really depends on the situation. In boss fights and magic heavy fights, WAR can have better mitigation. In large trash pulls or physical damage heavy fights, PLD may have better mitigation.

I did something pretty similar as well. I started off as a PLD because I liked the aesthetic of a sword and board, and now I've come to prefer it if I'm MT in endgame because I'm just more comfortable with it. That being said, my WAR is a ton of fun to instance with and play as an OT if that's what I'm doing. Honestly I think the two classes complement each other very well and it's always nice to have knowledge of both classes to make your self a more versatile tank. It also helps that you can share a majority of your gear across both classes so you don't have to worry too much about splitting up tomes etc.
