To answer the OP title, "FF vs 13" looks very promising as does the FF13 sequel (FF13 could have been a very long set up to bring in the epic-ness that will be its sequel, or FF13 was so long that they cut it in two, which is why the sequel is coming out so quickly, because.......'wait for it'........... FFXIIIx2 was always a part of FFXIII to begin with!). A lot of people liked FF13, and I for one love the story for FF12. Its all about individual taste, which is what SE like to do, they diverse their new IP from the last one, so the don't really play the same unless its a direct sequel. They bring in the different themes each title is going to present to us and there is nothing wrong with that. That's what art is supposed to be like anyways, different forms, different tastes.

all you had to do was press X and they would attack with the most effective spells or attacks etc etc. the easiest FF in my opinion

This is probably why. I remember when it was just Squaresoft, All of the games were real fun. Things seem to be downhill with that -Enix tagged onto it. I never really liked Enix Software in the past either.... go figure

I still personally enjoy near everything that SE throws out there for us. Overall though, old SS titles had more personality and charm to them, but seeing a square enix logo is like seeing a seal of approval for me now.

Even if they were still squaresoft, things probably wouldn't be dramatically different. Games take obscenely large amounts of resources to produce compared to good old ps/ps2 days. So they have to appeal to much larger groups, and the fanboys suffer a bit. I hear a lot bad about XIII from fans of the series, but financially it did well, well enough for a sequel even. One that I'm very giddy for.

I also just picked up Front Mission Evolved for $8, and am already finding plenty to enjoy in it. And that old title they made on the DS stands out, the one where you fight with pins on the bottom by scribbling out designs, while dodging enemies on the top screen.. that title was crazy fun, and a great story/design, tho I can never remember the name

maybe I'm just an insane SE fanboy

The last SE game that I enjoyed was 12, but it wasn't really up to par with what I thought of Final Fantasy. The last FF that I really consider to identify the series with was 8.

FF's now-a-days run into all of the Japanese anime stereotypes, emo guy, emo guy's helpless girl friend, tiny overly cute annoying girl, etc.....

And the story lines pale in comparison to my personnel fav, FF6, which seemed to be built around serious issues.
