Death definitely doesn't mean too much in Eorzea, though one could argue that
Bahamut, first of the Meracydian brood, didn't truly return any more than Good King Moggle Mog XII did, whereas these dragons look to be quite legitimately living scalekin
    Unseen and allegedly sleeping.
We have not seen him appear or awaken, he was just there. But there is this possibility that he is as much a "primal" as our Good King. Bahamut retained his form when fought in the Burning Heart (albeit smaller maybe due to technical reasons/being of appropriate size to be fought by players.) If that dragon on the logo is in fact Midgarsormr, then he is a primal and was one during the opening cutscene of 1.0. I know the devs said he wasn't a "primal", but that was before the broadening of the word's definition. Who knows, maybe Moenbryda will come up with a new name for those creatures in the coming patches.

Feel free to do so. I'm still catching up story bits and pieces as I had to skip a lot due to progress with the FC ^^

There's one of those brief "please look forward to the next patch" foreshadowing moments where the Ishgardians reveal that interpretations of the stars presage the return of Midgardsormr. Later, Lady Iceheart tells you to visit The Keeper (Midgardsormr is known as the Keeper of the Lake, guardian of Silvertear Falls) to see things with your own eyes.

Huh, apparently anything in HB tags doesn't count, because I'm getting warned to /10characters.

A new way to edit the post to circumvent the limits, maybe?

Hmm... I'll have to take that back. Moose, you've changed my mind on that battle I mentioned. The link between Ishgard, Dragoons and Nidhogg is too strong to deny.

I'd still like to think we'll fight Midgarsormr... Either way, we'll see something of him in 2.5, his story will likely lead us into 3.0 and I'm still willing to bet a couple gil that 'Middy' is going to be our 'big bad' for 3.0.

Also, I wouldn't put it past them to pit us against all the big FF dragons, if not all at once like XI's Bahamut fight but.

Here's a thought, Midgaursormer and Nidhog are both Wyrmkings. Bahamut was an Anchent Wyrm King before he became an Elder Primal. (I'm starting to beleive "Elder" Primal means that they were once living beings that were made primals over time since that fit's Odin as well) So who's to say that there is only one Wyrmking at a time. Though I loath to cross unrelated game lores, if we take the dragon higharcy of Skyrim into acount, Alduin while lord of All dragons, was not the only Dragon King but simply was the most powerful of them. So it's possible that Midgaursormer, Nidhogg, and many others, possibly even the Great Dragon Shenryu from FF5 may be Wyrmkings and we turn out to battel them all at one point or anouther. I'd also like to point out that in RW mythology dragons could shapshift, so it may be possible that in Dravania they actually ARE Kings of certin areas and it's simply an ability of Dravanians to shift between Dragonkin and Humonoid forms as they see fit.

From Fern, all an "Elder Primal" is is one which has been worshiped for a very long time. Bahamut was worshiped for thousands of years, dating all the way back to the Third Astral Era. Odin is similarly ancient.

    To add:

The horde of dragons with Midgardsormr at the battle of SilverTear Skies were Dravanian, not Meracydian.

I wonder if CT being in Mor Dhona and just the past history of Allagan/their technology is in anyway connected to Midgardsormr. We already know the bosses of Final CT. I'm referring directly to the Tower itself and its technology and the Allagan's common enemy being dragons in general. Perhaps the Tower has defensive tech which stops Midgardsormr from reappearing and clearing Final CT might trigger an event shutdown of defenses and the crystal drawing power from the sun.

    Pure assumption.

True, I forgot about that. And we already know when it comes to summoning primals that both myth and the long dead can be called forth as primals as long as the conditions are met. So even though Saint Shiva and Odin were once living beings they are primals because they have been summoned via crystals and worship. So weather he be Dead made living or myth made fleash Bahamute is still simply a Long Worshiped primal summoned by the Meracydians long ago.

    (Potential spoilers in links.)

Not to mention that the true dragon god is still out there somewhere. Either sleeping in a deep, dark, undisclosed location or lying in wait within the void ready to strike. In every case where he's existed, he's always proven that Bahamut is far from the most powerful.

...and with an ancient machination (often considered aforementioned dragon god's only true equal in power) threatening to be unearthed at Carteneau, it may be more inevitable than we think.
