L1 + Triangle and L1 + X (along with L1 + circle and L1 + square) are already in use for switching targeting filters.

Using the L1 + Face buttons to act as the directional pad is a brilliant idea.
These are a hold over from FFXIV 1.0, and do not understand why they were carried over. Nobody uses the left and right directional pad buttons to cycle thru enemy or party targets once they learn L1/R1 cycle thru enemies while the cross hot bar is active.

The one obstacle? Pressing L1 while pressing forward on the left stick engages auto-run.
Edit: Or so I thought. The game doesn't engage auto-run if it's interrupted by L1+Button. So alas L1 can still used for auto-run as is.

Dpad L/R are soft selects, L1/R1 are hard selects. They serve different purposes.Using the L1 + Face buttons to act as the directional pad is a brilliant idea.

I propose engaging auto-run should be moved to L1 + L3 (Left trigger + Left Stick). This would allow the remaining functionality of the L1 button to be preserved.
As a tank, L/R to other targets to hit mid-combo, then return to main target for final combo.
As a healer, L/R to attack mob then return target to tank.
You may not use them but that doesn't mean no one uses them.
If people used the target filters, they'd probably be griping that changing stance resets the filter. It'd be so incredibly annoying that you'd pull out your hair.
I remember them in 1.0. They were added to help with the broken interface. The directional pad was used to both select a target and select the intended hot bar or action. You'd first use the dpad to select a target. Then press (X). Then use the dpad again to select an action. Then press (X) again to perform the selected action. And then press (O) to and back to the dpad to select a new target and thus repeats the whole process over.
As you can imagine, anything that would help reduce the number of button presses was welcome!

I've been using them since 2.0 started, I have no idea what you're talking about. I switch between enemies, NPCs/objects and non-party PCs with ease using the filters. The only time they ever reset to 'All' is when I relog. Otherwise it stays with whatever option I've picked whether I've changed jobs or stances or whatever.
I'm quite sure a great number of people use them. Anytime someone asks for targetting advice on a controller, target filters is often the first thing that pops up, whether it be here or reddit.
I have no experience with 1.0 and I'm not particularly interested. It's history. All that matters is that they work great now.
They actually did introduce L1+Dpad options. Around 2.1, I think?
L1 up/down scrolls between the mobs on your hate list ← great for when your tank pulls the entire dungeon.
L1 left/right scrolls between alliance members ← not particularly fast but it works.
I just use auto-run. If you're using standard camera, you can maneuver with the right stick.
If it's only a short distance, I just reach over with my right thumb.

Then let me clarify.
Here you can see I have the set the filter to "ENEMIES", said so right above my HP (bottom of screen).
I engage, changing stance. Without fail, the filter changes from "ENEMIES" to "OTHERS"
Having achieved victory, I sheath my weapon changing the filter back to "ALL."
I have a hard time imaging people using this would put up with it for very long.

Besides the soft-select versus hard-select difference that QuCont mentioned, there's the fact that L1/R1 is limited to enemies only. The whole point of the L1+face button filters is that they're configurable and you can alternate between up to four different configurations for what you want selected. (Actually, I rather wish they'd use our L1+face button filters for both the L1/R1 hard select cycling as well as the left-right soft select cycling. I end up never using L1/R1 because we can't have that control over it.) What you want selected depends on what you're doing, and I'd rather think most people want some control over that, as I do.

Not to bring this thread back on topic or anything, but I really wouldn't mind if targeting filters were switched to L1+D-pad, and L1+face buttons freed up for this (and/or other things). I use target filters pretty often, but almost never when I'm on the move. Especially compared to cycling through the party on the move.
And, y'know, make it an option, because I'm sure someone else does the exact opposite of me.
