What I don't understand is why the attack was only on the NA Datacentre? The JP Datacentre was fine during this, why attack the NA one over the JP one?

probably because the person doing the attack is in NA and exploiting the NA infrastructure. The JP one is a little bit different and would require them to do more work. Plus what's the point of trolling people whose complaints and whining you can't even understand?
Personally I'm thinking that, while there's a good chance they're not from the same source, there is SOME connection between the rash of DDoS attacks on MMOs recently.

All but 1 from my FC (int'l on JP server) disconnected about an hour or so ago. Not even Lodestone was loading for me and some I was chatting with outside of game. :/ Sucks... lost my expert roulette bonus due to it. Everything was back to normal in not too much time at least.

eta: Third time recently. I wonder if we'll see more. :/

I'm afraid you only know half of what you are talking about.

It ain't the SE servers getting infected that would get them ddos'ed it would be normal peoples pc's that have had crapware installed bundled with infected crapware.

SE, I hope you are able to come up with a method to stop the attacks.

Even if you stop DDoS attacks, you can still force servers to infinitely queue a time server, making it lag and act like it's being DDoS'd... which is far cheaper to do than a DDoS.

Indeed. Even with adblock installed, it's still possible to get infected with something via drive-by download, etc. The only sure way to adblock is to use an edited hosts file: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm (Linux users | Mac users - You can still copy/paste in the hosts text file from the windows one, and it will still work fine)

Unfortunately, unlike adblock, this blocks connections to ad servers, etc. completely, all of their addresses and everything will redirect to 127.0.0.1 which will cause them to be "Server not found" (Unless you host your own website/server on your own computer.) A lot of sites such as cpmstar are considered unwanted/ads and if you use chrome, Newgrounds won't allow you to watch movies / games (Firefox will due to the way it interacts with ads and dynamic content thanks to it using Gecko Engine.)
