For some classes, it is. The Bard poetic top is extremely horrendous with the amount of skill speed it has on top of no accuracy. Although that's more on the poetic top being bad than the crafted top being good...This might be a bit off topic but I have never bought a crafted high level gear since day one. May I ask , what is the point apart from a waste of big chunks money? Don't get me wrong gear looks great but it is really worth it when I can get a a higher lvl gear from poetics? ( in the case of crafted 110 against 120/130 ) I find it more of a waste of time and money unless someone can tell me the otherwise. Is 110 better than 120 or 130?
Can you get a full set of i120/i130 within the first week of the patch though? This might be a bit off topic but I have never bought a crafted high level gear since day one. Well said.
Yah ultimately if you don't have millions of gil to blow up / spend, it's far easier (and usually better) to get the Final Coil / Poetics gear (and most of it is Best In Slot). For the few pieces that crafted might be better, it's only *slightly* better. Crafted Gear is sadly nothing like the difference maker in Final Fantasy XI (early years) or XIV 1.0 for some items. Yoshi P has decided to marginalize crafting (his design philosophy).
I do hope in 3.0 Heavensward that Crafters get to make *some* End Game-level gear that matters, like:
* Cursed Gear in FF XI (Requiring Adventurers (NM / Dungeon / Boss Drops (Abjuration Item)) AND it then requires rare / good Crafting Help combined).
* Or XIV 1.0's Uraeus / Dodore Gear (Requiring a NM Monster Kill / Drop if you get it) AND Crafters to help craft that into something special and useful.
One can only hope.
To the OP, it depends on how much you want to invest. If you want to invest millions to get all the top gear/melds/mastery books so that you can get to a point where you can make a ton of gil, go for it. If you're going for your supra tools, do it now while fieldcraft III's are cheap. While making the items for those tools you can also attempt to HQ them, and if you're lucky enough to do that you can use it for your master books.
Once you clear all the hurdles, there are millions upon millions of gil to be made![]()
Is crafting really worth it? Yes. I have have my crafting maxed to 4 star but the the high price of gear crafted gear isn't worth it. I craft for a fee when people bring things to me. I don't charge much unless I have to refine all the mats from nothing and hq is req for the item. My GF plays on another char and that one can only do 2 star. Most of the gil made is from the 2 star crafting and below. Above that it can be hit or miss on sales. So if you are looking at crafting, stop at the i70 main hand and some decent melds so you can HQ 2 star and below easily. Desynth is another area of crafting and can be a gil maker. Though it all depends on how you play the game and what you like to do. As crafting can be a major time sink and keep you out of other content.
I agree that if you want to make great gil, it's a huge time sink especially with the four stars. You need to spend your time buying/gathering materials, buying/crafting HQ mats for the actual synth, synthing the actual item and constantly undercutting on the market. But if you're willing to invest the time you'll make far more gil with the 4star synths than you will with anything else.
