For any new MMORPG there is an initial surge in players, but it levels off when those who just want to race to the endgame move on to the next new game. The ones that are left are those who are more committed to the game. When the bean counters see a decline in revenue they start to think about F2P to boost player numbers and a cash shop to pay for it. Eventually the shop starts to sell booster items for new players who want to catch up quickly. The nature of the community changes and more and more of the nicer players move on.
It happened to AION, and then to TERA (I moved on). I hope it doesn't happen to FFXIV.

Nope. Stuff gets added to existing loot tables all the time, to keep content relevant. Just because it wasn't added at the start, or in the last year, doesn't mean it wasn't intended to be added at some other point later - or more aptly, as a reward to the up coming Odin battle. The whole point of subbed games is to keep adding content over time to keep the subs coming in.
Exactly, so you recognize the fact that this was already in game, and cut out to be fed back to us for extra profit.
Not necessarily, Yoshi P *apparently* announced at the London fan fest that the cash shop minions were not going to be cash shop exclusive - A decision possibly made as a result of the 150+ page backlash that the cash shop launch has received, wishful thinking maybe, but not unfeasible.

IIRC, the quote was that future minions won't be cash shop exclusive, not that cash shop minions won't be cash shop exclusive. Not necessarily, Yoshi P *apparently* announced at the London fan fest that the cash shop minions were not going to be cash shop exclusive - A decision possibly made as a result of the 150+ page backlash that the cash shop launch has received, wishful thinking maybe, but not unfeasible.
Brilliant and true.
This is why I won't be buying anything from the cash shop. If developing these items makes the future patches lighter in glamour content I will cancel my sub for good.
This is exactly why I chose XIV over other MMOs and just as easily it can be the reason why I choose to stop playing.
What the announcement most likely means is that "minions" will not be exclusively available from the cash shop in future, and that there will always be minions released in the game to gain through game play as well as the cash shop exclusive minions which can be purchased. Not necessarily, Yoshi P *apparently* announced at the London fan fest that the cash shop minions were not going to be cash shop exclusive - A decision possibly made as a result of the 150+ page backlash that the cash shop launch has received, wishful thinking maybe, but not unfeasible.

From a mental standpoint, If I really want the Odin mount, I am technically "forced" to spend my money in order to get it. I can't get it in-game and it's not a vet reward, but I REALLY want this mount. You're right, I can ignore the Cash shop and I am not forced to buy anything from there. However, the end result of me wanting that mount REALLY badly and since there is no other means to get said mount, I have ZERO choice but to spend the 24 bucks for the Mount.
So In a way, it's Mentally forcing you to get a mount you want.
Voting with your wallet is hard, when there is a very tasty juice meat hanging on a thread waiting to be bought.
My original comment, after my own opinion, was about how the fighting and insults between each other is the problem. Stating opinions and debate is great when put out there in a respectful way and would still have the same intended effect, without it causing this massive divide between everyone as each side calls the other stupid. I know that not everyone is doing that, and that's awesome. This particular thread has calmed down for the most part but it is still happening in other threads. Not necessarily, Yoshi P *apparently* announced at the London fan fest that the cash shop minions were not going to be cash shop exclusive - A decision possibly made as a result of the 150+ page backlash that the cash shop launch has received, wishful thinking maybe, but not unfeasible.
I in no way meant that we shouldn't be expressing our own views on the matter, or that they would never have any effect on the situation, just that maybe we should be a little nicer to each other and stop throwing insults around. Instead, have some civil conversation!
Can't wait to buy my jump potion from lv1-60
