I'm curious... what is your general understanding of Economics ? Is your local grocery store "ripping you off" because "their kind" charge $1 for an apple? So, it isn't that your kind will rip off the player that doesn't knew the item is for sale on NPC, but you are providing a very valuable service because the player hadn't to make a teleport or worse, had also to use a mount for some seconds to get the item, instead. Impressive. Sorry if I got the wrong impression.
In the sloppy colloquialism that is imprecise day-to-day language, the fact that a merchant makes a profit selling someone else's product is a rip-off. But that is being blind to the fact that pricing is flexible and it more than just cost (materials + labor).
The fact that RMT does impact the market is no justification for price controls. It is irrelevant to this discussion. People that use RMT are not going blow even $1USD on useless items, even if they have more money than brains, they are not that stupid. They value their money more than anyone else actually. Many people put stuff out there for ridiculous prices because it is extra storage, and if it really sells for the ridiculous amount more power to them.

Yes, /sigh, that is a common fallacy born of ignorance & entitlement. There are transportation & storage costs... not to mention rent, electricity & staffing of a business establishment... so many other costs involved. All for a single apple sitting on my desk.
Using market board as an alternative storage is impressive too. But doesn't it being counted as "improper" usage of a game feature?
i've done it, but also hoped that someone would buy it. i could part with anything for a maxed out gil amount. so technically its for sale? :P
