I had another thought on Nandi, although I'm not sure how we would go about testing it effectively. The hint text (again, for whatever it is worth) talks about traveling in the area with companions. Could it be as simple as joining a party, or maybe just entering the area? I understand the evidence indicates that it is not active player action, so that is why I was wondering if it was passive action.

The Japanese text says

Now, Slycer didn't translate all lines for Nandi for some reason so I'll drag out the relevant one

You'd be better off avoiding travels to Upper La Noscea with any weird companions unless you want to meet the same fate.

Now, "weird companions" refers to "風変わりな連れ" (fuugawari na tsure). In no way does this directly point at the MINIONS (ミニオン) or COMPANIONS (バディ). It just says strange company. Companion. Strange following. Weird people. Weird party. Weird people. It can be any of those things.

Please *PLEASE* stop drawing conclusions from misleading translations.
