I ran out of gil from buying stuff yeah, including the weapon I needed for the quest and materia.

That's really weird, when I reached Lv. 50, I ended up with almost 300k. Granted I didn't really buy anything much and switch class then and there for some varieties. The relic quest only needed 35k for the materia-infused weapons from the market (at least that's what it was for the Scimitar+Materia that I needed). You could also asked people to meld it for cheaper too, I guess. My only road block was clearing Titan hard, because of the ilvl limitation. So I grind tomes for some cheap ilvl 90 accessories to increase it. Done it in a day.

Depends on the sever prices, my PLD relic cost me 70k ish gil.
