This is sadly true. With the current system, it will be a very long time until the MMO industry has something to make itself "fresh" again. My guess the only real outlook would be to invest in VR and create a fully interactive VRMMO. Of course, with today's technology standards, that would be incredibly costly and time consuming. I'm sure we will be at that point one day if MMO gaming doesn't die out before we get there, but for now we just have to deal with stagnation.

This is 2014 where MMO's are more like going to Disney Land than entering a virtual reality. I can't stress this enough. What you see is not a dying game, but decreased activity until the next batch of "rides" come out. That's how MMO's are nowadays, and that is how they will be until the industry is revolutionized again.
There is truth to this statement, yes. However, I can't help but wonder..1.X did not feel like this, at all. Everyone who played, played everyday and didn't get bored. We always had stuff to do, we actually had something of horizontal progression done right. We kept coming back for the social aspect of it, and there was always something to be working towards in game.

For the most part innovation happens in tiny trickles not huge leaps and bounds, so often all the little innovations go unnoticed as they slip under the radar.

However as far as MMO's go, player expectations are in a way the killers of innovation. We all say that we want huge innovation in the genre, but in the end if things are innovative or different we become uncomfortable with it and don't like it and want it to be more like what we were used to in some previous MMO that we liked.

IMO the best way to move the genre forward is to pull from all the other little innovations that other MMO's have done and implement them into your MMO in a cohesive and entertaining manner.

No, FFXIV is not dying. What is happening is that it is nearing the end of the 6 month/two patch cycle and almost all content introduced in 2.2 and 2.3 has neared the end of its prime lifespan.

This is exactly the same as how things were during the end of patch 2.1 6 months ago right before 2.2 released.

This means nothing. Maximum that you can get from this is that influx of new players is slowing down. There is no information about whether it still above of outflow of players or not. And even this information are not guaranteed as FC space becomes saturated and for newbies that outside of "we are group of friends so we need a separate new FC" there are a little need to create a *new* FC.

I know several people from 1.0 that are still here (both from casual and hardcore raiding crowd) and will be here in 2.4. Some of them are "long-term committed", thus unlikely to quit even if 2.4 fails to meet excessive expectations.

Our FC, which is on top of specific "food chain" (it's a language-based raiding FC) have roughly the same number of players for last 6 months. And raiders are the most volatile and easy to move out part of population.

^^ You can add me as one of the above, and have been playing Star Citizen Alpha for the past couple of weeks.

We need our 1.0 stats back, more horizontal progression, keep the current ilvl the same, but give us more raids, (Not just 4 bosses, every 6 months) with options of different gear with actual useful stats, like "Cure Potency +10" etc. If you go look at the questions for the live letter, that is what most people are asking for. People are getting bored, plain and simple.
Yeah, made a thread and suggested to bring back the multi-job dungeons we had in 1.23, and the outcome was pretty much many just wants to play their ONE BiS job and can care less about this game having any depth in term of strat like we had at the end of in 1.23.

This game, after all, is now a theme park game, aka, an no brainer.

every online game has to close at some point. it wont just run forever... when we will have FF21 online no one would play this one lol

Instead of looking into the future look in the present - having fun? play that game. Even if it closes down in 5 years, you had 5 years full of fun so why would it be a waste of time?

But isn't WoW a theme park game, too? Or am I mistaken? Even they have stat attributes for set gear ... I seriously want to know why Yoshi thinks we all have the mentality of three year olds.

It's not dying, but it definitely needs to do something different to keep players interested. 2.4 unfortunately sounds like it will be another 2.2 (Second Coil will be unlocked, we get three new dungeons that will most likely be redundant on release, Myth tomes disappear to be replaced by Soldiery and a new tome, new EX Primals, probably new Hildibrand Trial, etc).

What would be nice is if we actually had hard Light Party dungeons that drop gear that can be used for Coil (or a super secret new raid that will only have a loot lockout, allowing people who can't join their friends/LS/FC for Final Coil to do that raid instead. Difficulty will be above Second Coil, but below Final Coil).
