In case anyone wondered what happens to minions when they wither:

They look all pathetic and sad

And then when you remove them you get an extra kick in the feels:

Hi new gardener here so pardon me if this question has been asked before.

According to www.ffxivgardening.com, planting an almond seed next to honey lemon gives you a chance for an apricot seed. I understand that using grade 3 thanalan soil increases the chance of this happening. My question is should I use the thanalan soil for both patches or just the second one (almond)? If I use a cheaper soil for the honey lemon patch, will it decrease the chances of crossbreeding?

First off: Crossing Almonds and Honey Lemons for Apricot is a pretty bad idea, because only the Almonds get the chance to produce Apricot seeds. You should use a double cross like Pineapple <> Lemon or Tomato <> Lemon or even cheaper: Pineapple <> Rolanberry.

They all will yield Apricot Seeds in both ways. i.e. a chance of 8 per garden (If you use a Deluxe Garden patch)

When you freshly start a patch i always do it like that: (Let's say in this example we try to get apricots with Rolanberry and Pineapples)

As Rolanberries are pretty Cheap we start off with that: (X = Empty Slot, R = Rolanberry, P = Pineapple, O = Scarecrow)

    X O X
    R X X

For this seed use w/e soil you want. Being the first plant it is planted next to nothing and can not yield crossing results. Dont waste good soil on it.

Next step we all use Grade 3 Thanalan Soil while planting. That soil increases Crossing to nearly 100%. Plants you now add you only should plant next to already planted ones so they cross, like this:

    X X X | R X X | R P X | R P R
    P O X | P O X | P O P | P O P
    R P X | R P R | R P R | R P R

When you have fully planted the Patch, then you remove the cheap seed planted with the cheap soil because it wont yield intercross anything:

    R P R
    P O P
    X P R

And replant another cheap seed into the opened spot with Grade 3 Thanalan - now it will yield a seed because it is planted next to a crossing plant.

    To sum this up:
    1) When you want to cross, Plants that are planted when nothing is growing next to them will not yield any seeds.
    2) Using expensive soils on the first planted Seed in a fresh patch is a waste of money, except if you want to increase the Yield with G3 Shroud Soil
    3) Check crossings if they work both ways before planting, having a full garden for only 4 possible crosses when you can have 8 will waste your time. Especially if you only got one Patch

Hope this helped a bit ^^

this is the first time that i've gotten 9 bags of seeds at once ... just wanted to ask if this is normal?

I was going for sylkis bud seeds, so I planted krakka root seeds then shroud tea leaf seeds in a circular pattern all with grade 3 thanalan topsoil. the krakka roots matured before the shroud tea leaf so i harvested them, and planted more krakka roots in its place, only this time with grade 3 shroud topsoil. when the newly planted krakka roots matured, one of them yielded 9 bags of sylkis bud seeds (along with the normal 18 krakka roots)! has this happen to anyone else?

If you are using Grade 3 Shroud Soil this is completely normal. With the low chance on crossing and having a 50% chance on getting another seed it is kind of a lottery tho. But when they cross 4/8 in one patch youll have enough seeds for weeks to come ^^ had that happen a couple of times now ;3

So is it a good idea to try using shroud soil to build up your seed reserves?

I just got my first gardening yield and I would like to get more than one seed per patch.
