This reminds me of the time when Free Company housing was released, someone came with a lower tier than "cottage" and it was basically a cardboard box and he called it "shanty house".

My husband said it best today when I explained to him about this personal housing crap SE gave us...

"Hey, imagine if they put in a new ward that is just small and even smaller housing, and they make a shanty village for personal housing."

Not the housing option we imagined, but this is the best people in Eorzea can afford right now…

I'm not usually one of those "In FFXI..." people, but I can't help but think that in that game everyone had their own room FREE. Mind you, it was only a small room, and not a *house*, but it was still big enough to do gardening in (which is primarily what myself, and several others, want a personal house for). There are also numerous other games out there where houses do not cost NEARLY as much as in FFXIV, and have the same sort of customization options, allowing everyone to enjoy the features of having their own custom house and not just those select few with horrifically large bank accounts.

Actually I played a game once which had a housing system called mycamp.
You could set your camp up in any safe area , towns etc
It looked just like a little tent, but once you went inside it acted as a full player house which you could decorate and upgrade.
People could then enter your camp freely, or you could lock it with a password and just let your friends in.
One of my fave housing systems.

This is the perfect solution to the housing problem.


They could fit a few hundred of these tents in a ward and have another gil sink with upgrading the interiors. Have different types of tents exteriors would be awesome as well. We have magic gosh darnit! Have the magic guilds work together to create these (heck, even have a quest where we help them to unlock this feature!) and we can upgrade the interior for a myriad types of styles. If we want to have a balconey/courtyard where we want to garden, another upgrade quest and voila! Heck, give us the ability to craft growing boxes, mini greenhouses where we can grow things.

Put in a community chocobo stable (or even a community garden as it was suggested) and we're golden! Still give individuals the ability to have actual houses in the wards but this would be available to everyone, something to be acheived and worked for. (Since they love that type of thing in this game.)
