I normally just peruse the forums to see what's being said, but I'll add my 2 gil on this seeing as it was a feature I was really looking forward to. Out of 13 years of MMOs, I saw two early games pull off housing (in my opinion) quite well. Star Wars Galaxies and EverQuest 2.

At launch Star Wars Galaxies had housing that was super affordable and you could place it in a wide range of locations. Decorating and upkeep of the house was the only thing you needed to really worry about. I saw some really impressive housing arrangements in those days and the interior decoration contests were super fun.

EQ2 was similar to the personal rooms we have for FCs, as their base rooms. Much larger apartments were available at launch for the right price. You didn't need to be associated with a guild to have said room. You even did a quest to get your own personal room for free (minus super cheap upkeep costs) that you could decorate as you saw fit.

Here... This is by far the most disappointing and inefficient means for housing I've seen in 13 years. Inn rooms you can't touch decorating wise. Personal rooms being dependent on if you can stay in your FC and not get booted for whatever reason. Being told personal housing was going to be cheaper than FC housing, yet on release it's matched pricing in the same wards... *sighs* This was one of the main features I was really looking forward to and saving up 2.1 mil is overshadowed by a 4 mil buy-in price with limited plots.
And for those who are saying "Why does it matter?" Well, to me it does because I'm like that. Let me gripe, say my piece and go about my business.

    Edit: for text limit.

Thanks agreed. I've been playing for almost 20 years and the same for me and EQ2's system was IMO perfect. The only other close second was LOTRO. Both had the same thing in common, they had a weekly upkeep. THAT alone will make new housing appear for those people who didn't want to keep the houses past a certain point. The mechanism was there for serious people who wanted to take advantage of the housing mechanics without penalizing the entire community. Those who didn't want to pay for housing had a small home (EQ2) that was free.

Add Lord of the Rings Online to that list. It even has an almost identical 'Ward' structure, and even has guild housing in the same wards as personal housing... but they were separate and it WORKS FLAWLESSLY. Housing is easy, relatively inexpensive, and fun. Houses were shared across all of your characters, too, so you just needed ONE.
