Help, shimmering graphics and strange shadows. (picture)

What is this? It makes all the foilage shimmer. Small ropes, poles and edges also shimmer.

update: found no solutions. loaded months old drivers, cleaned the computer, tried both nividia inspector and usual control panel: nvidia gtx 770. the trouble is in all games, but much worse in this one.

Its poor shadow resolution, and one of the many banes of Skyrim.

No. The shimmering/flickering around grass, trees and just small/linear objects is not 'cause of resolution. That just changes how good it looks, not how much it flickers and stutters. I have no idea what causes this, but it is making it unplayable. Perhaps my card is broken.

It's probably related to the method FFXIV uses to render lights and shading. Your shadow settings are creating high resolution shadows from low resolution models. FFXIV's deferred lighting and shadow rendering method probably doesn't help reduce the amount of shimmering/flickering you're experiencing. I am going to venture to guess this *might* be reduced/resolved when the DX11 based engine is released, but odds are you'll have to live with this. Too bad FFXIV wasn't built on Luminous Tools rather than Crystal Tools, eh?

I'm looking at this picture and I'm telling you, I don't see anything wrong with it except a little bit of bad grass shadowing. I wanna say you're overreacting :<

Here, please bare with me on the bad FPS and image... here's a recording I made myself. I don't think I'm overreacting. Is this game supposed to look like this?

Look at the 00:21 mark... there's a perfect example. When the sun is out in the game, all hell breaks loose.

Either the resolution you recorded at is too low to get a good view of the issue or there's nothing going on.

Ignore the video until the stairs comes up at 00:21 mark. IT doesn't matter what settings I'm at, it's always shimmering like that. Or does the game just look like that? Like the effect on the stairs. Is that what previous poster was talking about with shadows?

update: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvOhPKOgyb0 here is the perfect example. Anyone have any ideas whatsoever?

I get this, too, with shadows set to reasonable settings. It gets a little better or worse depending on how I set the shadows. With all the shadow settings at max, it mostly goes away, but I get about a 30 FPS drop, too.

10 posts per page is only the default setting; it is bad, and you should feel bad if you haven't changed it.
