I keep having to remind my family that I CANNOT PAUSE AN MMO WHILE I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF A BOSS FIGHT. There is no pause button. Things will attack me if I'm not in a safe spot while afk. And they never seem to get that.

me thinking: cuz all the quests are far apart!

my dad: oh I see you're running now on a giant chicken!! you're always running in this game.

Sometimes a mate of mine who also enjoy a Game here and there but is not into MMO's is with my in the room when I am raiding. You know, in Coil or Ex fights things can, thanks to a minimal error on one player's side, go from absolutely fine to raid wide wipe in the matter of a heartbeat. So the conversation was quite often like this after a wipe:

Mate: what happened?
Me: explaining what caused the wipe
Rinse and repeat several times and at some stage:
Mate: why are you even doing this when you fail so often? Is this really Fun?
Me: akward Silence

Better don't think about why you do it. Either do it or don't. There is not much inbetween.

Not exactly funny, but...

My mother was visiting me while I was raiding. We talked for a bit, I could concentrate on her as we were waiting for few AFKers to come back. She heard a sound come from my headset and asked if I had a movie in the background. I offered her the headset to listen to my raid group and all she heard was tired mumbling and yawning.

"I guess they stay up late, too."

I went home for a bit this summer to spend time with my family and was asked to explain the basic premise of MMOs, dungeons, and such to my well-meaning mother. Later, when I was playing, this happened:

Mom *walks into the room, stares at screen, stops*: Wait, so you're all alone right now?
Me: Um, yeah?
Mom: But you're a healer, right?
Me: Uh-huh...
Mom: *extremely concerned voice* Where is your tank? Can you survive without a tank?!
Me: Um, yeah I--
Mom: And you don't have any damaging persons! What are you going to do if a monster jumps out at you?!
Me: Nothing will jump out at me, this is a low level--

*a Roegadayn miner runs past*

Mom: THERE'S A TANK! THERE'S A TANK! Catch that one!
Me: That's a person, not a pokemon...
Mom: *does not compute* But, then how do you get people to be on your team?
Me: You send them a message and ask.
Mom: ...Oh. No wonder you're all alone. *walks out*
