I was kicked for saying I was new once. I was trying to get thru Hests I'd never done to get to Pass the Smell Hest. I'd always mention I hadn't done one before and was new. At one instance, I think it was Ward Up, I got kicked, just for saying it was my first time. (I'd watched a video, just hadn't done it yet, but they didn't even ask.) They'd rather get a new DPS than explain how it worked to a new one.

So yeah, saying you're new and asking for advice can have consequences.

This is the thing: everyone wants you to know the fight, but they want nothing to do with you learning the fight. It's someone else's problem.

Its seems like a lose lose situation. If you're doing a bad job you get scolded. You offer kindly advice you get scoled too, lol

Did you take the time to go through your class quests before you started doing group content, OP?

Did you take the time to really read through the effects of the different abilities you acquire through leveling up before doing group content, OP?

Did you read through ALL the active help windows that would pop up frequently every time you did something new, OP?

Did you also explain to your party that you were new to any given run(you already pointed out you didn't have a keyboard and that you didn't, which is a huge foul)?

If you answered no to any of these questions, then you weren't being a responsible player, and it isn't the group's job to keep you up to speed when you show no indication of being considerate yourself.

MMOs are games of give and take. It's unfair to expect other players to go the extra mile for you(and more often than not they're more than willing to) if you can't do the same. Yes, it's a video game, but the relationships and social contracts are still very real. Once again, it's give and take.

Additionally, the duty finder is the "bottom of the barrel", lowest common denominator of group-finding mechanisms. You're going to find all kinds of players, and there are no rules other than need/greed lotting that are enforced by the game. You're essentially on your own. What I would recommend instead is to use the party finder, which allows you to set parameters for different types of content, including new player runs, no cutscene skipping, etc. Finally, if in situations where players DO engage in nasty harrasment(and they do), you can use the vote kick function(assuming the rest of the party is onboard) or you can report the player, and I guarantee that after enough reports(which particularly toxic players have more than a few usually), that player will change his or her tune. I'm not going to say there aren't asshats out there(that's unfortunately a large theme within the gaming community), and it sucks that you had to go through a nasty experience, but think realistically about what you could have also done to help the situation instead of pinning it on(either rightfully or otherwise) the other group members.

Given that you're a new player I don't expect you to even know about the Party Finder's existence, so I would suggest you look it up.

As another person said, you can't hold the group responsible all the time. Since you never said anything, they might have thought you were screwing with them if you were playing badly and might have been a troll. I'm actually very upset that SE never opted to bundle a keyboard with the console versions of the game, which could have helped to mitigate these communication problems.

Always 2 sides to this coin, the people who are new and want to learn and the people who are new and don't want to learn. same with people who have been in game for awhile and refuse to explain things because its killing their zerg time and they are the snowflake that was more special than you, or the people who are vets and explain things and get silence in return....

Apparently all we know how to do is dissect everything someone says and provide nothing relevant to the case in point so I'll be deleting my comment Have a nice day arguing with each other.

Not sure how you do in your average daily life. But I would hope you use a dictionary for words you don't understand.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it.

And? It's ok to cause problems for others because you're afraid someone will treat you badly because you say you're new? You're just putting on the same shoes at that point.

Nope. Different view than the OP, doesn't condone the action.

Nope. Post just gives an advice plus stating a different view than the OP, doesn't condone the action.

And there's multiple like this across the following pages. Exaggeration sure is fun!

A keyboard is absolutely required to communicate and play in this game. If you don't have one, then don't play. It's really that simple.

To your broader point, the reason why people such as myself are pushing back against the obviously vague and dubious notion of being "understanding and helpful" makes it seem like creating a healthy community is a one-way street. The onus to contribute does not rest on the shoulders of players who are more experienced.

Even within the specific situation indicated by OP, we can see the futility in rendering detailed and comprehensive support and advice in-game. I'm not talking about small or individualized changes by style (e.g. speed runs, to mark or not to mark, how to handle certain mechanics).

What we're talking about here is a lack of basic knowledge about a member's role and the mechanics of enemies and bosses. As I discussed previously, the time when you're in a duty is not the time to be asking questions about how to play and what to know about the dungeon.

This information is available freely and easily online.
    • You can listen to the smooth, sultry voice of MrHappy as he walks you through your class and each dungeon and encounter.
    • You can support other up-and-coming videomakers on Youtube.
    • You can go to Console Games Wiki, FFXIV Guild, FFXIV Info, and even IGN for guides, with or without pictures. With or without descriptions. With or without videos. Take your pick.
    • You can search all the other various forums for threads about your topic of choice.

Now, instead of struggling through a duty because you just got a sloppy, haphazard TL;DR from another party member, the new player comes in armed with knowledge about their role and the dungeon. Now, they can focus on practicing things they should be focusing on: more complex tactics and nuances of their role and the duty.

Again, it's been done on Japanese servers. It works. Everyone is happier. Life is easier.
