I don't even know where most dungeons are in the world. Don't really know why I'm there or who the bad guy at the end of the dungeon is. Tam Tara had a good storyline attached to it and that's it.

This is the one thing I never got - So many want to copy WoW but they never copy stuff like this..lol.
A dungeon like that wouldn't really operate well on their dungeon timer system. Don't get me wrong, I'd want a dungeon like BRD, and honestly I think the dungeon timer has served its purpose (I assume it was just there to help cull the initial rush since there was a lack of instances, and that isn't really the case anymore), but SE seem very reluctant on getting rid of that. Heck, even their big raid coil has to be split into an instance per boss just because of that timer, so it seems unlikely that they'd do it when they go that far to keep it.
In addition, the reason dungeons like this aren't made very often, even in games that allow it easier, or heck, WoW itself, is because it actually seems to be rather unpopular when its there, then looked fondly back on by the few that liked it and just kind of glossed over by the ones that didn't. I remember a lot of people talking about not liking BRD at all back in vanilla, and hardly anyone actually ever did the side paths.
As far as I recall people would make either streamlined runs for Molten Core unlock, bar farming runs, or streamlined runs as short as possible from bar to emperor, ignoring all the side paths. When the dungeon just gets treated as two streamlined dungeons, with about half of it ignored by the vast majority of players, I can definitely see why from a developer standpoint it would be more feasible for them to just make two streamlined dungeons, rather than "waste" development time on a bunch of side passages that will hardly ever see the light of day.
Again, I would love a dungeon like Blackrock Depths, just playing a bit of devil's advocate on why we will likely never see it, and why most MMOs don't try to make dungeons like that in the first place.

That's why I said Lost City was wasted potential - It was a 'gated off area', but ended up as an instance instead of overworld. All they need to do is make more overworld dungeons and simply instance important sections when need be, e.g boss areas.
@Magis
If we're talking direction, don't forget SE had 2 choices for Tue next expansion, Flying and Swimming. Yoshida chose Flying. Since we know the xpac will center Ishgard's thousand year war, it could be possible that we may go to a Sky-esque dungeon for the new Binding Coil to fight the dragons that keep Ishgardians on high alert
Surprised no one has mentioned wanderers palace. Doing the scholar quest chain and realising it's an actual civilisation that called it home would make perfect sense,
Considering we have only touched one floor of the palace and you can see by all the lifts their are many many more, it could easily be expanded.
Tam-Tara too technically. If you look over the edges, there are more paths and rooms.Surprised no one has mentioned wanderers palace. Doing the scholar quest chain and realising it's an actual civilisation that called it home would make perfect sense,

Yoshi announced long before those references were even put in the game that for the expansion pack his choices were Sky or Sea an he chose Sky, so I'd say that is the direction they want to go with the game.
This. Not to mention that building personal (or maybe just FC) airships is also something we will be seeing in the future. That pretty much means we'll have some kind of need/use for our own airships and I can't see Yoshi adding airship crafting into the game only for us to only use them as just transportation to some new area.
I am considering the new Ixali story as kind of a beginning lore stage to whatever the "sky realm" will be (I forgot what the Ixali called it).
