I remember them being that short in the movie Seven Samurai, the original black and white version I mean (cmon you know you want to see Keanu screw with this film too)

if I recall, back in version 1, people had the same question, and the devs answered that they were short because they wanted them to look cooler, not in the "cool" fashion wise way, but in that they didn't look as warm to wear and would help keep you cool during the hot summers, thus they went with the mini version. Their response was something along those lines.

Dev said 'cool,' artist got confused and thought they said 'soapland?'
You don't make yukata cooler by cutting away at the amount of surface area hidden from the sun, you do it by making them from lighter, thinner fabric... Jeez, the excuses for appeasing their ecchi fanbase, lol.

they're short for practical graphical reasons i think, since they would look really strange if they were as tight as they need to be.
That said, the short versions DO exist, and the male ones actually make MORE sense in that regard, as summer festivals will frequently have men wearing shorter versions while they do things like haul massive shrines or throw fire at things.
I've actually worn one. They're not as fancy, but then again these were issued to EVERYONE
They only make sense during summer, though, and usually in the areas that get REALLY warm like Okinawa or Kyushu.
This. If they made the yukata's to standard they they'd have to animate all the female models to tip-toe in that 3" space yukata's give to move around, lol. And then somehow make it fit to go as fast as our characters run. I like these, they fit the summer theme better.they're short for practical graphical reasons i think, since they would look really strange if they were as tight as they need to be.
