Achievement Points: Give them a purpose

...an empty system that really has no place in an MMO.

Achievement definitely is the real endgame score, it reflects your completion.
Some achievements are very hard to obtain and most ppl can ignore them,
and as you said, a normal player at least should have n achievements completed when he calls it end game.
If he doesn't, his end game apparently has missed some experiences that everyone have.
Then he can review what he has missed. ^^;
