The point a few posters seem to be missing, the problem is not the existence of RNG, but that they go too far with extreme RNG as a terrible attempt to time sink content. They didn't set it like this just so it's meant to be a challenge, it's meant to be yet another massive time sink, it's just a lazy way to develop little content and make it so you're forced to wait until they decide to add more small content.

Time sinks aren't completely bad per se, but the devs here abuse them too much to the point there's little of this game left that is yet to be unmolested by an excessive time sink.

Hey OP, don't forget that catching the Olgois is the easy part. After that you have to either make a buttload of money to buy TEN fieldcraft demimateria IIIs (~425k gil each on Sargatanas), or be a master crafter to make the stuff to desynth artisan specs for the chance at the dmateria.

Because including an insane grind that has absolutely nothing to do with fishing makes total sense for a purely casual, "communication with nature," "do this when you're waiting to do other stuff" activity like fishing is.

The casual player either doesn't or can't play a large number of hours per week, thus making any artificial time sink even longer, ultimately resulting in said player not able to complete the content while it's still worth completing. This wouldn't be a huge issue if SE didn't invalidate old content every 1-2 patches, but since they decided to use that model, they have to lighten up on the RNG to compensate.
Again, I said "you talk as if." You never mentioned it but you sound like everyone just wants a spoon-fed casual experience where they get their loot within a very short period of time. True casuals take their time on content, regardless of being rewarded promptly or not. If you don't get what you are looking for for the day it's perfectly fine, there's always tomorrow, or the next day after that. Typical "casual" content gets outdated within 3 months. Long term "casual" content, within 6 months. There's plenty of time to get what you want before it becomes "old." Regardless of this fact, SE has set it up so that it's "tier-like" -- you have to obtain items in a progression-like manner to get to the better gear.

They don't have to lighten up on the RNG while the equipment is valid, players need to stop being whiny babies, man up and grind the content like everyone else. Or wait until the inevitable nerf.

This is a more valid argument. However, I don't believe it's as extreme as you are stating. It's more so the fact that there's so much to do in game that players feel they need some of the content to be eased so they can move onto other things. It's pretty obvious that SE wants people to either focus on one task at hand, or divy up their time amongst different tasks and events, so that it in itself creates it's own time sink. For example, I spend a lot of time leveling up my classes to 50, doing PvP to increase rank, collecting items for Ninja, or working on my gathering. I can't do this all at once in a day, or week, or even a month. So I take my time and pick the content I want to do, and hit that up for a week or so, then change it up in the coming week. It's to the point where people who no-life the game can't even do it all unless they pick one thing and hardcore it until completion.

But it is that extreme trust me. This is coming from someone that finished the first set of the Big Fish log and I've only caught about 6 of these new one and they seem more myth-like with the catch rate, short time of day, certain weather conditions, and the high RNG rate. As a casual with not much time to put into the game, I've all but given up on it completely. I think that's really the point of this thread, it's casually extreme this fishing is..

I just wish they let us do something with out TP.
Miner and Botanist get the abilities to increase HQ yield or their chance of harvesting an item, why can't they adapt it to Fishing? =\

A tacklebox would also be really nice... -_-

They started a whole "tacklebox or riot" thing earlier the I'm very sure fell on deaf ears. There's still been no proof that a dev has even said yes or no to a tacklebox. I assume we are stuck with what we got but I'd really like a dev to prove me wrong. An increase in yield %'s would be nice for the new fish but I think they need to rethink the massive RNG versus skill issue.

The fishing getting away message is really annoying. Not just for the Olgoi. Plus there are fish like the Olgoi with a shorted window to catch. 2-3 hr in game window @.@
