This has been my cathartic release thread for the last two weeks. Every time I post criticism, I'm back to cloud nine again. Then I play the game, get reminded of why I was getting depressed to begin with and the cycle repeats itself.
Good times!![]()
<looks for a picture of the Titanic>
FFXIV hasnt hit the iceberg yet..... but I'd say we're on course at the rate its going.
I really, really liked this game at launch.... less and less so with every patch though....
It is the classic "I think this game is going to die because it plays like WoW and not FFXI/1.23 thread". Always funny to hear people scream the game is doomed when it is one of the most successful MMO's out there now and does not look like it is dying down any time soon.
Pitchforks be thrown at me if need be, but I still think it is great that they use WoW as a blueprint when recreating the game.
The thing is, if there were any viable alternative, FFXIV would be dead already.
Its succeeding because it has no challenger, not because its a stellar game. When you've got no compeition, you can get by with mediocre, and FFXIV shines in that department.
MMO's are one of the most competitive genres in the industry. There are at least 2-3 MMO's announced a year trying to challenge titles like WoW, GW2, and now ARR. I don't see the mediocre part, this is the most well polished MMO I have played since WoW/FFXI back in 2003/2004.
You can polish a turd.... doesnt mean it has worth.MMO's are one of the most competitive genres in the industry. FFXIV looks nice, runs well but is shallow in depth and at the rate they keep rushing out content without putting any thought into consequences.... doesnt bode well.
They've taken things from other games that were actually fun... and turned them into painful grindfests... thats not something to be proud of.
It's got close to no competition in the console market as pretty much the only "traditional" MMO on there aside from XI and DQX, pretty sure that's where the majority of users come from at least in the eastern markets, DQX is currently stuck in Japan so that's also less competition over here. It's got far more competition in the PC market and by PC standards its sales and user numbers are within what you'd expect from a WoW clone, still much lower than WoW and even that is still losing subs, it won't ever surpass it either. Another reason it's doing "well" is because most of the other major WoW clones have gone F2P, those WoW clones didn't last much longer than 3 years at best as P2P, but we'll see.
Dude's doin' fine!
