In 1.0 Tanaka had vision, but no direction. In ARR Yoshida has direction, but no vision. Unfortunately based on his cataloge of played MMO's his direction is all the old 1996 era grind fest MMO's with I wanna say no real grasp on modern generation MMO games. !.0 despite all its issues was very enjoyable and had a far nicer community while ARR feels I wanna say "safe" and "corporate" while at the same time feeling like its a see-saw type mmo like it doesn't know what it want's to be or what direction it wants to go. Difficult and set one patch and the next patch everything that was difficult is now just simply given away for little effort, just like you said...a time sink.

Through it all I have to keep reminding myself the game was developed with the JP market in mind. If NA and EU players enjoy it? Then great! However I feel our complaints and issues will never truly be answered unless the JP players find fault in something if they even speak out against faults. All in all ARR will survive after we are gone, the fandom of Final Fantasy and the XI nostalgia people will keep it going. Though I fear in the end FFXIV will turn into the same "Good Ol Boys Club" XI developed into. Which is fine, if that's what the majority want then they can have it, though it will be without me too!
