No they said " a lot of people complained that rogue is not thief, but it is, we just have changed the name to make it fit eorzea but feel free to play with the idea that rogue is thief in your mind because it is."

You can make up as many delusion as you want in your little head but fact is rogue = thief, period.

A Thieves guild would be perfectly fine in either Limsa Lominsa (which openly has pirates, who are basically thieves and murderers on the ocean) or Ul'dah (this city is corrupt and greedy enough to want an official headquarters for organized crime ... so that the Ul'dah nobles can get a cut of the profits and make sure crime is neither too high/unsafe nor too low/unprofitable).

Think of it this way: Rogues are state-sanctioned Thieves. Complete with writs of approval from the heads-of-state. Much like privateers are state-sanctioned pirates, whom possess writs of approval to commit acts of piracy upon a rival kingdom's ships. They can continue their piracy so long as they don't steal from the ships of the kingdom that they are working for.

Rogues can be even more legit than that. Special Forces, Snipers, Cav Scouts, and other Agents are all modern examples that fit the mold of a rogue. Anything stealthy, quiet, and deadly can be a rogue. Which is also why it makes sense for the Rogue to branch off to the Ninja job. Thieves are your pickpockets, breaking and entering, and shoplifters. Not really a glorious thing to be proud of as an adventurer. Not to mention.. as the producer has said.. ineffective when fighting that big dragon, demon, or god beast.

We want killers, assassins, and scouts. Not the brigands we kill for exp.

Thief and Ninja are entirely separate jobs, or at least they should be. This is not what I wanted.

I really never understood the argument that a THF would be out of place in the lore/world... other FF games managed to fit in heroic thieves quite well, it's just the limitations of the writers' own creativity that prevents THF from being part of this game. There was THF in FFXI and was still considered heroic even when you could steal and mug.

If you're worried about THFs not being heroic in FFXIV, maybe have there be a plot point where the thieves' guild is going through conflict, where some of the guild is shadier and only about their profits, and the other part of the guild (which your character will side with) will be the ones who want to essentially be Robin Hoods and take their skill to help others while also helping themselves. Then you'd have a nice story arc about the Robin Hoods muscling out the shadier THFs and starting a new era of the Thief Guild where they undermine the rich and corrupt to help the less fortunate (and themselves of course).
