Massive 8.8-magnitude quake strikes Japan

TOKYO — A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan's northeastern coast Friday afternoon, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and sending people out into the streets.

Japanese television showed major tsunami damage in northern Japan on Friday. Public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

A tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii.

Smoke was seen rising from a port building engulfed in flames.


The agency says the quake struck at 2:46 p.m. Friday at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, about 240 miles northeast of Tokyo.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.

Footage on national broadcaster NHK from their Sendai office showed employees stumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks.

Police and coast guard officials said they were assessing possible damage from the quake.

Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude temblor on Wednesday.

Top of that this month the moon going to be very close to earth which the last time that happen was 18YEARS ago this could = flood on some area of usa. Am not being silly we been on earth for a long time we going to run out of time soon or later. The sun is going to turn old in 5.5bill years ya that a long time we all going to be dead by then but the fact is don't blind yourself what could happen better be save then sorry. Yellowstone can blow up anytime there many things that can happen 2012 may not be one of them but a big tragedy could happen

Something bad may happen. Then again it may not. We should all be aware of the fact that something bad could possibly happen but also possibly not and prepare accordingly by doing all we can, which is nothing. The end is nigh!

Seriously, you're being disrespectful. Take your tin foil hat and leave. This isn't about your paranoia, but about the tragedy in Japan.

My condolences go out to those who have lost loved ones, as well as the countless others dealing with the structural and financial damage done. Here's to hoping we get some news from the FFXIV team on their status soon.

Yeah, we haven't had a big one like this for awhile. Pretty surprising. Luckily Japan is used to earthquakes so we have a lot of procedures in place for safety.
