I'm not sure I follow you. Did you use the /micon command to set the icon then? If you change the icon through the menu (not via the text command) it should behave as a perfectly generic icon. I used to have a Flare macro like that and it annoyed me because it was perpetually lit up (even when some of the abilities used in the macro were on CD).
