I find the lack of "role-playing" disturbing.

Two reasons:
First, you can't guarantee the age of the person you're ERPing with (to SE's satisfaction, how do they know you two know each other, etc.)
Second, if ERP was condonable or encouraged by SE, the ESRB might need to change the rating on it.

Of course, play experiences may vary and stuff like that. Everyone has their own opinion, and publicly displaying ERP in-game (which I should've stated earlier, my bad) is just bad form in my opinion.

In private is fine, if you're wondering about my stance on it.

in regards to the bolded bit. In the case of most games that have an online component or are a MMO you'll see on the ESRB rating a little disclaimer which reads "Rating May Change During Online Play" or "Online Interactions Not Rated By The ESRB", the latter is the disclaimer found on the 1.0 box.
In the case of FFXIV this means the game as written by Square-Enix and the content they created was rated as T by the ESRB, however, they can't control the things random players you run into are going to say, so that bit is left technically "unrated" as it is too dynamic for them to be able to factor into the rating.

That could be another part of typical RPing, and some take it too far with erotic roleplay (ERP).

....... or whenever I hear the term "derp", I think "dynamic erotic role play" or "detailed erotic role play". Haha! Try to get that out of your head now XD

Seriously, RPing a relationship, being married, and even having offspring is standard RP fare. You'll even find generations of characters here on FFXIV.

When I played SWG I did quite a bit of Role Playing on my Jedi Character ( Post Patch 9/Pre-NGE ). I even had a whole back story of where my Jedi had survived the Order 66 Purge in the Wilds of Kashyykk having been injured and nursed back to health by an Imperial Medic who then gave birth to our child. She was a Force Sensitive who I later encountered when I took a mission/quest to redeem her and set her back onto the path of the Lightside.

Balmung is the place you wanna be for role play. the other day i was fishing minding my onw buisness when up came 4 role players. they spent like 45 minutes roleplaying .

also a couple of months ago i experienced a hyur woman whoe ate some shrooms and was talking to her dead mother.. i took the oportunity to use my deer hat and swimsuit and started roleplaying as her concience, she went along with it!.... this has been the only time a roleplayer improvised and took me into account , it was awesome!. the rest just ignores me.

Hahaha, that is great! If I actually thought people would actually pay attention to me when not RPing with a party, I would totally go along with improvisations like that!

I thought this game has the most active rp community I've ever seen but that's because I'm on Balmug which is the unofficial RP server as we all know.
