My reasoning is that these events are not "available to everyone" as many try to claim, particularly because of the cost disparity based on where you live, what you do for a living, how you can arrange your work/personal schedule, etc. This ends up bringing more real life circumstances in to impact the game.
Also, did you know? People who join the game late won't have access to limited IN-GAME ITEMS AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE FOR A SHORT TIME? Say, a Chocobo Earring, available for 2 weeks, if the person joins 3 years from now, they'll never have access to it.

Same concept as Festival exclusive items - It's available to everyone, unless you can prove that Las Vegas/Europe/Japan banned you from ever visiting their cities. If you can't make it, that's unfortunate, but the opportunity is available as long as tickets remain, when tickets run out then there's no more opportunity.

And somewhat related, I also look at it this way. I pay monthly for access to the game and continue paying (along with many others) to continue developing the game. Cases like this make it seem to me like they are using those resources I am paying in to to produce an item that won't be available to me.
This is a weird way to look at it. The way I see it, I'm paying so botters and hackers can ruin my gaming experience, that's far worse use of your money than an item you can't access if you don't go to a festival
