I can evade but he cannot due to close proximity and delay in movement. Healer stance should at least make him stand back somewhat.
I avoided this by speccing the healer tree but keeping him in free stance. He'll still occasionally get hit by cone and are attacks, but he looks after himself and me now too a lot better. I found the chocobo in healer stance to be half retarded.
