I mean - I'm sorry to be that way.
But this game went from fun, to work, and then to punishment really fast.

I'm with you there. I raged hard last Thursday due to my shitty luck and haven't played the game once since then. I'm what you call a "no lifer" so I like to play 6+ hours every day, more like 10+ on days off from work. But due to 5 Atmas in 1,150 Fates, I just can't bring myself to log in anymore. My sub is up on the 26th, but I don't think I'll be back before then. I'll come back when they raise the drop rate, but only if that is before 2.4. I'm not coming back being 2 patches behind everyone else.
On another note, my daughters got me a gaming desktop PC for Father's Day. So I'm gonna use it to try out Wildstar and ESO while I'm holding a grudge against ARR. If either of those games tickle my fancy, I won't be back here, period.
Haters are gonna hate this post, but I think SE needs to know exactly why they are bleeding players, and why this is a very bad time to be letting that happen.
It's literally about luck. I got my very 1st Atma (Crab) on the 1st FATE I tried. I was averaging 1 Atma a day while having only 1 hour of grinding. After the 4th day I was not getting any. Then again I got 1 random one every other day. 2 days ago I got 2 Atmas of Scorpion on back to back FATES. I'm currently at 7 or 8 Atmas plus my extra Scorpion Atma. Personally I don't mind Atma farming. It gives something to do while out in the field or waiting on a Duty.
Yes - you're doing it "wrong". Atmas were never meant to be farmed or hunted for in atma parties or endless whole day FATE sessions - the desing is to collect them "randomly" as you happend to pass active FATE on your way to do something else. I've only recently started the Atma quest, got my first one just after two FATEs which I've joined only because they were active just right next to me. And I'll not "chase" or farm those so I might get it in about the same time as you but in effect spending about twenty times less griding actual boring FATEs and doing something else I do enjoy ...

It wasn't easy for most of us, hop in random fates as you pass them along the way to doing other things or limit yourself to just an hour a day if it makes the task more bearable.
I finally finished my 1st yesterday after approx 150hours (collectively) fating stick at it and do other things inbetween
If its this hard on you, then why are you doing it? Its even more of a grind to get to animus and novus.
Atma is 100% optional.
Living with a roof over your head is optional. Eating 3 meals a day is optional. Having people love us is optional.
But all of those things are things we want, so you might say there's no option. I want 12 Atma's, so it's no option for me.
And the Animus grind is NOT worse. I wouldn't care if I need 10k myth PER book, and have to run Sastasha 100 times. At least progress would be measurable and I would know exactly how long it would take me. I don't mind grinding when there's a goal in sight. Or when someone who plays 10% as much as me has a 90% less chance of finishing his before me.

You know what else is optional? Everything in the entire game. Relic is a story quest and people are excluded not by skill, but by an UNFAIR mechanic. Besides that it's the second most powerful weapon line in the game currently.
Story + Powerful weapon. Optional to obtain yes, but it's a major part of gearing up and doing Atma is NOT optional to get a Novus weapon.

Unfortunately with that mindset and his luck it'd be ~1 year before he went from Zenith to Animus.Yes - you're doing it "wrong".
