    This feels too much like, "They did it in XI, why not here?" sort of thing. The only thing your starting city does is give you a tutorial and introduce the main storyline. The thing that's similar to XI's nation storylines is the Grand Companies and as has been mentioned, you can change that as soon as you hit max rank. And even then, there's little difference between the Grand Companies beyond a theme fitting that of the city it's in.

    I agree with this. Doesn't even matter if it's important or not. It should be our display. At LEAST to display or not. They really should add this.

    The reason they link home city with your starting class is so that you can pick up with your class quests as soon as you qualify. This is actually a pretty big deal considering some of your class abilities are locked behind class quests. If class and city weren't linked then those starting as marauders in Gridania would be considerably inconvenienced, having to wait till level 15 (so they could travel to Limsa Lominsa) before they could even do their first class quest. Yes, you could just change classes at level 10 to one available in the city you're in, but if you were going to do that anyway... why pick a class not in that city at the start?
