On an older MMO i would lure a pack of mobs onto people who were afk then i'd log or use a skill to hide myself, the mobs would attack the afk people and kill them they would drop their items and i would profit. It was better than killing bosses half of the time. It takes away from the sense of danger but i think it's needed to stop stuff like i used to do.

Yeah that's MPK (Monster Player Kill), and like I said in my last post you could disable mobs aggro'ing the other players until they return to their spawn area.

I think Ultima Online allowed looting corpses of other players. Possibly old Diablo 1 as well.

Even in the dreaded WoW exploration was great. Lots of variety, fully open world, enemies you could actually get useful loot from by killing, random high level rare-spawn monsters in areas called Elites I think where you had to be a bit higher level, or with 2 people to take down, but they dropped something good.
I never played XI so I can't speak to its systems

Darkfall, Ultima online, early everquest, Asherons call, All had Your loot left on your corpse after you died. Sometimes the mob that killed you might loot an item or two off your corspe and you had to track them down and kill them to get it back. Often times you would kill a mob and get the items they had looted from players they killed.

This article gives an idea of what some of these games are like if anyone is interested in learning
