For those who don't read reddit, I've posted a wall of text regarding pathway loops (http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/commen..._2_hypothesis/) there but I'm having trouble explaining jute. If anyone has any ideas or data on this (e.g. various jute crosses like jute + almond, jute + azeyma rose, etc.), please post a reply.
Growing the actual Jutes now, so it'll be ~two weeks 'til I can test/confirm (JUTE + ALMOND) and (JUTE + MANDRAKE).
Interesting on the pathway loops! I'm running into a silly problem of not having enough Apricots for my Glazenut+Apricot gardens atm since I decided to dedicate 2 gardens to Juteyness. h-hehehIt's surprising that many gardeners on my server aren't touching the Jute market, so I decided to give it a go.
Edit: Decided to leave the Jute testing alone for nowA garden down because an FC officer decided to plant random grapes. xD

Theory: The intercross is determined by the seeds its planted next to at the moment its planted.
Think about it. Many people report only getting 4 seeds every time they put them down. I know if your like me, you always plant glazenut gardens like this.
G = Glazenuts
A = Apricots
O = Emply spot
A O A
O X O And after you get one of the 2 planted, you then plant the other seed to form you garden
A O A
A G A
G X G
A G A
However what if you planted them in order in a circle
7 8 9
4 X 6
1 2 3
like 1) Apricot > 2) Glazenut > 3) Apricot > 6) Glazenut > 9) Apricot > 8) Glazenut > 7) Apricot > 4) Glazenut
This would also explain why no one has ever reported getting an 8th seed on a garden planted at the same time. Because that first seed wasn't next to anything when it was planted.
If this is the case, then you just need to make sure all of your seeds are next to something when you plant them to get a cross, and can even control which plant it crosses with somewhat.
If you then dig up the first seed you planted, and planted a new one in its place, you should then be able to get 8 seeds from a garden.
This explains why some people get 4 seeds, and some get 7, it explains why no one has got 8 seeds, and also explains some of the strange intercross that happen when people plant cross at different times in partial gardens.
Thoughts?
It has merit. I always plant them in a circle and get 6-7 seeds and haven't been able to understand why people consistently report getting only 4 seeds, and only from the apricots or glazenuts but never both at that.
Holy hell that may actually explain it... I know a ton of my last few harvests have produced 4 sets of seeds and only 4 despite being potentially capable of producing 8.
Also I have a dev request if they check this thread: Can you make it possible to grow mushrooms? Maybe by planting some rotting wood or maybe make mushrooms grow by letting our plants die by not tending them but pumping them full of fertilizer? Of course if this happens tending the garden by non-FC members should become restricted.

Interesting theory! Going to include plant order on my result tables now.
I do have a tendency to plant the corners first, then the middle spaces.
I've already planted my Glazenut-Apricot gardens for the week doing the corners first, so I sadly cannot try the clock method this week(unless I can get my hands on some more Apricot Seeds for my Glazenut seed surplus... first world problems, I know)!
Edit: Actually I can test this on the Rolanberry-Prickly Pineapple gardens I'm about to plant.
8 Apricot seeds from a garden? (Yes, please.)

Just planted broombush + almond, hoping that produces the broombush loop, and jute + mandrake to increase our stock, then will test with jute.
Planted a glazenuts - apricot patch earlier this week.
First the glazenuts in the corners, then the apricots in between.
I harvested 4 seeds from the apricots this morning, a fellow gardening fanatic harvested 3 from the glazenuts later today, so I don't think the theory holds up. (Screenshots can be provided if you want).
Was it an empty garden when all the planting was done?
I just harvested 2 gardens about 10 min ago, first was for Halone Gerbera which i had just happen to plant in a circle order, was my first time planting for that item. i got 7 seeds from it today. That was the first time i had EVER planted in circle order, AND the first time i have EVER got more than 4 seeds. The second was a glazenut garden, planted the apricots in the corner, and then the glazenuts in the middle, it only gave me 4 seeds on the glazenuts, and nothing on any apricots.
I think this theory will just need more testing. Also i will point out that the 1 that didn't give me a seed on the Halone was the first thing i planted.
Notice you still only got 7 seeds though alice, are you SURE that they were planted corners then mid? because it just makes so much sense, and my own garden lived up to my theory. I have another glazenut patch comming up in 3 days i will see what happens with that.
Garion, I think your theory is correct. I'd have to look in my screenshots folder for proof, if any, but I recently got 7 Glazenut seeds from an alternating Glazenut/Apricot clockwise planting, and then got 7 Apricot kernels from a Prickly Pineapple/Honey Lemon arrangement today using the same method. The first seed planted also did not yield a seed back either time. I also distinctly remember usually getting 4 seeds back in other arrangements whenever I planted in the corners first and then on the sides. I'm currently trying this same clockwise method out on some Linseed/Mandrake to try and get Azeyma Roses; I'll try to remember to post my results here when they're ready to harvest.
