Personal opinion. There's no "one gear to rule them all" in MMOs and XI was one of the few that actually allowed you to micromanage gear for certain situations. In other MMOs, it all came down to if you had the latest raid armor set which is why most MMOs tend to have horrible economies, especially if they have a crafting aspect.
