Untill you get rage of halone, it's more of a 'build hate to lose it' sort of thing at that stage.

...That actually makes it fun to be a GLA/PLD tank in those scenarios, imo. Holding just enough hate to know "that'll do it" then starting to build on the next target, while your DPS finishes them off.

So, an experienced tank has leveled up warrior to 50 - the tank that everyone agrees is balanced - and gladiator to a modest level is arguing that nothing is wrong.
I'm not a tank at the moment.
I am a tank Senfei has a point. There is no problems holding enmity in low level dungeons. Whatsoever. Even with High allagan people in the party. Because their stats are reduced as well as yours so it balances out. I even SR with fc members in sword oath with no extra stress on the healer (l2 use def CDs) and zero enmity issues.

When Ive ran low level as WHM or a DPS class ive given advice to new tanks struggling with enmity and turned them around. But switching Sword and shield oath, doesn't make any difference. As for those dungeons enmity aint a problem still with SwO. Switching em wont make any difference to the combo, so no real point. Only time may be struggling with enmity is if the healer is over healing constantly, especially if they medica spam overheal on 8 peeps. Or they throw a regen on you just as you tag one mob XD

    How about ultra low level.

I've recently rolled a character on a new server and finally have got around to leveling a tank.
I was leveling a MRD and decided to wait until level 12 to do the level 10 guildhests because that is when I get OP.
I enter one and realize that overpower is greyed out because it is a level 10 zone.
These are supposed to be peoples introduction to their roles in groups but a MRD has zero abilities available to hold hate on the groups and adds in these level 10 zones.
If I was completely new to the game I would take the frustration at not being able to complete my core group function and quit playing the class.
By level ten both tanks need aoe hate and a range skill to pull mobs.

I'm going to reply even though I recognize that I'll get flamed for it.

It was a lvl 10 guildheist.

Are you saying that Heavy Swing (150) into Skull Sunder (200) plus extra enmity isn't enough to put you on top?

    At level 10:
    Archer--Heavy Shot (150) + Straight Shot (140) = 290
Lancer--True Thrust (150) into Vopral Thrust (200) will tie you. Or they can Impulse Drive (180) from the rear.
Pugilist--Bootshine(150) into True Strike (150) into snap punch (140) is more then your raw but I think still less then the enmity gain you get. They can get more if they actually move from the flank to the rear and back with their moves.
    Conjurer--Stone (140) and Cure enmity.
    Thaumaturge-Blizard (150) and Fire (150).
Arcanist--Ruin (80) and Bio (40 Dot) plus their pet.

At level 10 no one has any AOE.

At level 10 I'll confess I really just view it as a learn to play with others phase. No one really has their end game skills nor does any class really have their (I bring this to the table as xxxx) skills. All the classes are almost interchangeable (with cross skills). If the DPS are stilling enmity off of you it's a learning opportunity for both of you to figure out how to play. If the PUG or LAN are taking enough hate off of you with your enhanced enmity generation then they are either playing very well or you are not using Skull Sunder. I'm open to being wrong, or someone showing me what I'm not seeing, but no I don't think you need AOE hate or a range skill to pull mobs.

The problem here is communication. Since no one can do aoe yet, everyone should be attacking the same target, and the tank should be cycling hate combo if possible, but yeah, if dps pulls it, dps tanks it.

So what I've been thinking is that it can be difficult to tank in a lower level dungeon after getting used to a certain way of tanking in higher level dungeons. So, I've been thinking about some ideas.

After a bit of thinking, I think we need one of two things if we really wanted to make things easier for tanks (to try to give tanks more motivation to do the lower level dungeons rather than seeing the dungeon and quitting right away if it is too low level):

    1) The ability to use later skills in earlier dungeons (Not so much trials and fates, but dungeons). Probably weakened but still having them available and just barely useful could help as long as they aren't weakened to the point of being unusable. Note: I'm saying skills specifically, not traits (aka: specifically actions and jobs list of stuff)
1a) The ability to cross class your current job's job skills and class skills for use in lower levels.

    2) Better level sync for gear. I don't mean like perfectly equiv, but maybe pink gear be like 1 level higher, green be 2 levels higher, and blue be maybe 3-5 levels higher? (Again, not so much for fates but for dungeons)

The healer of love and justice! (Or the mad/insane/evil/berserk healer depending on who you talk to).
I've played healers for so long that I can heal in my sleep literally (People have seen me do it).
I like to do a bit of everything, but my preference is healing+support (until /that/ happens). FF14 title: Macro Queen
