Ring of Thorns is 100(150 combo) in a circle around you.
Doom Spike is 160 straight in front of you.

Yes but they don't do a combo they spam it.

Better spam doom spike with two buff for great damage.

It just depends on how the mobs are stacked up.
The fact that Doom Spike drains TP fast is the probable reason.
Alternating between Heavy Thrust and RoT lets us stay in the fight longer.

Honestly, most people just suck.

I use Doom Spike if most, possibly all of the mobs the tank has pulled are stacked tightly enough. If the tank decides it's a good idea to run around in circles with em I'll switch to Ring of Thorns.
