I don't buy gil. I see no need as gil is easy to make. I have no complaints about the market for the stuff that I sell - it's made me many millions so far - so I don't see the impact of RMT there. As far as the tells, they are at worst an annoyance to some. For me, they are just background noise now - I don't pay attention. I used to see bots that I assumed were RMT farming things like diremite webs but I don't see that anymore.
It would actually be interesting to see an analysis about how RMT actually affects the game economy - not just blanket statements that don't come from a position of knowledge. I would not be surprised to find that a certain amount of RMT is actually good for the game economy as it results in more demand for high price items with gil buyers ready to put down the cash to buy and regular game players ready to sell.

This is pretty much completely incorrect. Buyers are completely to blame for the problem. If there are no customers, RMT would take their business elsewhere. If there were no buyers, RMT would not exist - there's no point in spending money to advertise if no one is buying your product.
SE needs to crack down on gilbuyers - make them AFRAID to buy gil, because they know that they'll get the banstick. The trick is to figure out how to detect that someone buys gil so you don't accidentally ban someone innocent. It's a publicity nightmare when a company starts to get accused of banning its own legitimate customers.
SE goes after gilsellers because it's SAFER - it's a lot easier to determine whether someone is selling gil than it is to figure out whether they're buying it, and a gilseller is a whole lot less likely to cry on the forums than a gilbuyer.
Lucky you.
I get 10-15. This is every day in 3-5 hour sessions. Weekends... lord. 20 or more.
I got fed up with it over this weekend. /tell has been taken off all my chat tabs and the sound effect turned off. Thanks to SE's incompetence and lazyness they have killed off an entire chat channel.

Anyone that buys Gil needs to be permanently booted out the game, their the sole reason I have to regularly clean my blist to delete random letter names
I'm like Seif. I hear maybe one or two a play session (usually 6+ hours each Sat and Sun, maybe 3 hours on the weekdays). Playing on Balmung.Lucky you.

Maybe I have blacklisted all of them. The only tells I get are mostly on the field not in towns anymore. I'm not even that active of a b-lister and only started using it when they made the name click feature.

I have never black listed a single person in this game, and I only get about 1-2 tells a session offering gold for the lowest price.
RMT is not out of control. You guys who complain about having to deal with tons of spam, your blists are over flowing and you don't know what to do. I will tell you. Stop being a solution in search of a problem. Simply learn to ignore it.
People don't want to invest a lot of time in a game. Time = money. Money = time. I've played games where selling cyber currency is in the game's design. In those games any player with an account can sell their "gil." It does seem to get the RMT's out of chat when there is a real life currency Auction House.
I would not buy game money with irl money because I'm on a budget irl that doesn't have room for throwing money away.
Most important: you can't trust RMT's. They demand a real life phone number, check it, plus personal information. They proceed to hound you for the rest of your life to buy more even if you've quit playing years ago. They will steal your account if they can by emailing you phishes usually with a threat that goes something like: "you have been found guilty of account theft if you wish to clear your name click this link....." etc etc etc and all with company logo to make it look nice and official.
RMTs are cyber pirates stay away from them.

RMT is obviously cheating and people should get banned for it, but I do wonder why anyone would bother with it?
I think it would be a bigger problem if there was ANYTHING worth buying with money. All the good stuff is in allagan tomestones and coil. Housing costs a lot of money. Certain furniture pieces can be expensive. pentamelded high end gear will dance the line of being coil ready, but to progress in this game you don't actually need any money.
and the /tells are annoying but at least they aren't shouting in every city anymore.
However I do think it's interesting when game like D3 endorse and monopolize RMT and others EVE & wildstar allow you to buy/sell/trade game time with in game and real world money and also tacitly look the other way at RMT in the name of sandboxness.
I do NOT think there is a place for that in this game at the moment. But its certainly an interesting concept when done right
