Black Mage Question

Hello. I just bought the game yesterday and I'm having a blast. I'm confused on the black mage job tho. I created a Thaumaturge and I understands that I need to get it to level thirty and a level 15 Archer. SO do I level my current character to thirty and then log off and create an archer to 15 then I can log off and make a black mage or what?

Or do i level Thaumaturge to 30 then change it to archer and level it? I'm confused but not sure about all the jobs and professions like alchemy and goldsmith. I tried google but can't find much detail.

Anytime after getting thaumaturge to 10 you can start visiting other guilds and joining them. You have to complete enough story to get the airship to get to Gridania to pick up Archer though. When you visit a guild and join it, they will give you a starting level weapon. Equip that weapon and you become that class. Equip your thaumaturge weapon and you are back to being your thaumaturge.
Once you join another guild you will also unlock equipment sets, so you can save all your gear including weapon as a set for easy switching.

As Sagittarian stated, you do need to go to Gridania to unlock Archer, but you don't have to wait until you unlock the airship as you can simply travel there by foot or chocobo porter (It'll just take longer). To answer your question, when you meet the requirements for Black Mage (lvl30 Thaumaturge and lvl15 Archer) you would go to the Thaumaturge's Guild to find the quest to become a Black Mage. Make sure you finish the class quests though because if you did not do them, you would have to do them in order to unlock the quest for Black Mage. Once you finish the quest for Black Mage, on your Thaumaturge, simply equip the Soul of the Black Mage stone you get from the quest and you're a Black Mage!!!
