I'm pretty okay with that. Makes me think of the new weapon trials system in FFXI. And I still like the idea of having a use for my old weapons/armor as I level other than just selling them.
I think it's stupid. Why am I going to wear a crab bow NQ to transform it into materia when I could be using my +3? Am I missing something here? It's just causing 50s to needlessly grind to make materia. No one is going to invite you to a raid party and say it's ok for you to bring your gimp equipment for materia purposes. People want you wearing your best.

I had noobs who tried to come to events in FFXI with lower level jobs, or hitting mobs with different weapon while farming for key item to pop NM's and stuff. Probably not raid party but other stuff they may add into the game; people might be able to wear that gear so they can make it into materia + doesn't mean you have to party, they making stuff so you can solo probably can work on the materia's during your solo hours.
You can wear your +3 if you wish no one is stopping you.I think it's stupid. Why am I going to wear a crab bow NQ to transform it into materia when I could be using my +3? Also you need to stop thinking that everything is thought out for the ones that are currently level 50. It makes a lot of sense if you think about it starting at level 1. You wear gears, you level up a bit, you change your old gears into materia and you attach it on your new gears. Rinse and repeat. When you reach level 50 and start to get end-game gears, your old gears that you were wearing will be ready to turn into materia to attach to your shiny new gear.
If you are not willing to sacrifice your current gear, then buy it and stop crying. Or just grind materia on lower-gear when you have some free time. Work for your stuff sometimes, you might feel good about it.

And to debunk your argument...the BEST gear would be your Crab Bow+3 PLUS the Materia from another Crab Bow probably...so go figure...
In the end SE gives you the choice, do you want to be hardcore and grind equip to turn into Materia to add it to your best equip, or do you just want to wear whatever is best for you w/o adding Materia. This is a great system. It encourages the hardcore people, while not putting the "casual" players at a big disadvantage, cause if they wear their equip, it will be convertable into materia as well, just later and not as fast as a hardcore person might get it done. Win:Win Situation!
Keeping in mind that 100% of this topic is based on unfounded assumption, I have some unfounded concepts of my own I like, and think would work well.
Example.
Each slot could have a "blank slate" type piece of gear.
Helm of possibility.....
Chest plate of possibility.....
Gloves of possibility.....
Hooded robe of possibility.....
So on and so forth.....
These base items can have base states, and drop of NMs.
Next, other NMs can drop various materia that can be crafted into the base gear. Each materis can have a name or color. Personally I would like to see it have names from the series.
Materia could work similarly to the way it is used in Final Fantasy VII. However, a new feature called Materia Fusion allows for two Materia to be fused together to create a stronger Materia with higher stats.
■Magic Materia is divided into Dark Green for offensive magic, Light Green for curative magic, and Yellow-Green for defensive magic.
■Command Materia is divided into Pale Yellow for attack commands and Gold Yellow for item-associated commands.
■Independent Materia is divided into Light Purple for DMW Materia and Dark Purple for stat-enhancing Materia.
■Support Materia is divided into Light Blue for elemental and status-related Materia and Dark Blue for SP abilities.
There are five basic Materia types, distinguished by color.
■
Red - Summon Materia: Used to summon creatures to aid in battle.
■
Green - Magic Materia: Used to cast spells, including Black, White, and status-inducing spells. Also affects Strength and Magic stats.
■
Yellow - Command Materia: Allows the use of extra commands in battle like Throw and Steal.
■
Blue - Support Materia: Can be linked to other Materia in order to enhance their effects.
■
Purple - Independent Materia: Various functions, including increasing stats and auto-abilities such as Cover.
In addition to the above, there is the unique Command Materia, the Enemy Skill Materia, which teaches Enemy Skills to the player.
Frankly, its about time to get pets into the game. As well its time to get blue magic in the game.
Now depending on what stats or abilities one wants to specialize in, would be directly influenced by the materia one has imbued in there basic gear. SO the gear on one player may have completely different stated and benefits then anothers.
This is just a rough idea, but Its a working idea. Either way, I would like to see the only way to aquire materia stones or the items they can be merged into, drop off NMs.
That doesn't actually debunk the argument. The materia from another Crab Bow is going to have to be farmed. Since they're adding the system to increase demand for NQ gear, I highly doubt there's going to be any difference between materia derived from NQ vs +3 bows. This means one of two things (or a mix of the two, I guess). Demand for +3s will go up (not the intended effect), or people will wear NQs to convert to materia (wearing sub-optimal gear). On the other hand, I doubt anyone will turn +3s into materia. Worst case, there will be multiple, situational materia that one would want added to their weapons. This would certainly encourage a mix of the two, since it's easier to carry multiple weapons with separate materia than to completely re-do the materia inlays each time. Especially true if the weapon's been double-inlayed. Either way, it's certain that everyone (more or less) will be running around in sub-optimal gear just to convert it to materia for their real weapon. Maybe after a while enough materia will be floating around the market that it won't really matter, but until then, yeah. . .
I will agree with Perrin's assessment that it's a great system to use while leveling classes, though.
That's your own fault for trying to perform two incompatible activities at once. If you're going raiding, you should be focused on the raid, not on producing materia. If you don't want to grind to make materia, don't. Wait for it to show up on the market.I think it's stupid. Why am I going to wear a crab bow NQ to transform it into materia when I could be using my +3? Am I missing something here? It's just causing 50s to needlessly grind to make materia.
