Why are there so many black mages around?

Speaking from personal experience here but Black Mage has more efficient AoE than Dragoon.

Secondly, while I have played ranged DPS before, I've never played a ranged caster.

With the way people are speedrunning, it's just more efficient to use blm. Bard AoEs take too much TP. =P

Not really. Was running BLM-BRD combo and we were doing at 5mins 35s.

Just started doing speed runs (learned how on Monday) and we get to the second boss around this time or lower.

Because Black Mages are the most-demanded speedrun DPS because they have access to large amounts of easy AOE damage and myth-hungry tanks don't realize that BRD, SMN, and even DRG can do nearly as well.

They also generally come out on the top-end of DPS period, too, if they're halfway-decent.

Nah but my reason to play BLM is because it fits my personality the best. It is the class that feels the most "me".

Speedruns. Best sustained AOE. Other jobs don't even come close but few want to admit that.
