ps3 to 4. should I switch?

You can play on the ps3 if you keep the ps3 license on the account, If switch the ps3 account for free to a ps4 account. Then All you need to do is get a another copy of the ps3 license and be good to go. Or you can just not transfer the ps3 license and just buy a brand new copy of the ffxiv for the ps4. Just you will not be able to log in with both versions of the game at the same time. So need make sure you logged out of the ps4 before you play back on the ps3 or vise versa . When you have both the PS3 and ps4 license on the account.

As for the game it self the PS4 version is so crisp and amazing. You will realize it the ps3 version thats buggy and slow and laggy. You will have a difficult time ever even playing on the ps3 again.

you can't downgrade, yes.
But you can buy a new PS3 box and use the registry key in it to register the PS3 platform to your account again.

Before upgrade:
PC platform
PS3 platform

After upgrade:
PC platform
PS4 platform (the previous registered PS3)

Add PS3 from a new box again:
PC platform
PS4 platform
PS3 platform
