Fate wise, it took me about 400 fates. Perhaps I was just lucky but nevertheless I was pretty happy whenever I saw the Atma message pop and I could move to the next area. I enjoyed that feeling as I enjoyed the feeling I got when I got the upgrade and could start grinding books.
I'm against changing the drop rates of Atma or the amount of Myth dungeons give out or anything like that and here's why:
1) The Zodiac quest is optional. There are equivalent or better weapons elsewhere. The Animus weapon will only be like 3rd best weapon for me. Even though SE plans on adding upgrade quests, I'm sure they will also add other equivalent or better weapons, meaning the Animus weapon serves only 2 purposes: to get one by until they get one of those other weapons or because it looks cool. I don't think people should be so irate about an optional quest. If you don't like something, don't do it. I don't like PvP. I wouldn't get angry if there was a high level PvP item that was the 3rd best for my class...
2) It's a long term goal. Yes, some of us want it NOW, but you could get it before the next patch with a pretty minimal time investment. Basically, this is another thing SE is giving players to do. They don't have to do it and not all parts of it are equal (the book part is way more enjoyable) but it is very preferable to wanting to play FFXIV but then not having anything to do. I like that there's something new to work for.
3) It puts players to the test in a different way. Not how good you are at dodging but how fast you are at rushing fates, how patient you are after 100 in a row with no drop, etc. I think the cultivating of patience is far more useful a skill, both in game and in the real world, than hand eye coordination or even memory.
4) It takes away from the satisfaction of achieving the finished product. This is an extreme example but if a Fate dropped an Atma every time, guaranteed, it would just feel like another hollow fetch quest. You would never feel that excitement or relief - ("FINALLY!")
These are just a few examples, I can think of more. At the end of the day though, maybe SE should have taken their 2.5% drop rate and just told players they needed to beat 30-40 fates. Same average time expended and less players complaining about fairness or RNG. I would be fine with this compromise. But I don't want to see everyone with an Animus right away the way that happened with relics. Accuse me of being a special snowflake if you want but many players do want to feel special, like they've achieved something significant, even if it is only for a couple of days.
I'll be running around with my glowing weapon and people will be like "whoa" but when everyone is running around with a glowing weapon, people will be like "yawn" and "this game's too easy" and "there's nothing to do."
