Is there going to be open world content ever? Have I missed news or anything related?

On one side (myself included) you have those that love the game but wish their was more to do other than look for blue icons on the map, and six dailies a day, and actually enjoyed farming sky in XI
On the other side are those that think the game is practically perfect in every way and is covered in fairy dust and cookies and nothing should ever change because no one should tell the company how to improve it, how very dare they!

To the individual telling people to go play something else, get a grip, people pay a sub they play what they like

You're really not doing yourself justice by acting that way. Just because people like some things the way they are and don't agree with people who say there's something wrong with it, doesn't mean they like everything. Would I like more open world options? Yes. Would I like to stable servers? Yes. Can I have them both? For the time being, no. Can I live with that? Yes. If you can't, then consider other options in the game. If you still don't like it, play something else, the game isn't for you. If the options open up later, during an expansion, come back and see what you think. I'm not saying this to be facetious.

I said I wasn't being facetious. You've been so argumentative about this, it doesn't seem like you actually enjoy it. It isn't an obvious flaw, though. A lot of people don't want content like that because it can be alienating. I also said "consider other options in the game", not outright "you should quit".

In other words, relax. I explained before why this "obvious flaw" is a matter of server stability, which takes time and effort. There have been sooooo many threads on this.

Even after reading this thread, I only have a vague idea what the OP actually means by "open world content", and I have the sneaking suspicion that whatever he meant by it isn't necessarily the same thing that all the supporters (and detractors!) are thinking the exact same thing as him or each other.

If it's fond recollection of camping against six angry JP linkshells at 3:00 am for a pop that may or may not be Niddhogg, then the nostalgia goggles are cutting off circulation to the brain. That should never have even been a thing, and the fact that E Body was so godly it topped the list until Adoulin and its ridiculous ilvl gear was the foul icing on the cake. Free-roaming, limited NMs - small OR large - were a pox on FFXI, and promoted bad attitudes and bots whenever they dropped anything worthwhile.

If folks are just looking for a reason to get folks out of town and actually do stuff in the field, Treasure Maps are a start, and it's far too soon to guess that that's all SE intends. I'd guess we're going to be stuck with 8-man for a while, though, until SE works the kinks out of alliances to the point where folks can sign up for instanced alliance events with multiple parties.

Well, we got the books, dailies and trasures... sadly, I don't think we'll ever see anything like Sea or the Shadowlord castle in this game, but at least it better than what we had at release, I guess.

Not sure how you see it as vague. Sky from ffxi was pretty self explanatory. I'm not saying they need to something exactly like it obviously. They clearly can learn from its flaws and things that worked well. Anyone who played ffxi can tell you that sky was what made the game when it first came out. It was the expansion that brought it to America. In terms of release content. What we have now would have been the JP ffxi equivalent before sky. They have an expansion in the works apparently, the question though is whether or not its open world or just more dutyfinder stuff. I don't see a future in which I'm still playing this game if its just more dutyfinder stuff as the game progresses cause I just don't meet people and FC's don't work with the way the game is currently set up unless you are able to manage segregation and grouping within the FC.

This is why I'm more or less asking for devs or people who have information if any that there may be openworld in the works. Apparently there was a live letter that mentioned it so there is some hope. I wasn't aware of this. That's what I was asking for, hence the thread title.

This right here. SE is riding on the Final Fantasy name because they know how popular and loved those games were. Remove the FF theme from this game altogether and it becomes just another MMO. I guarantee those things you listed that you could live with now would have killed this game a while back. The executive leadership of this game would seriously be considering whether or not to make this another F2P. It's all about the profit..

You have to recall that the company was going bankrupt, due in part to the failure of 1.0. Now that things have started to turn around, and the game has exceeded expectations, we should be seeing an improvement in some of these areas since they will be able to afford better servers. This also may have to be a quarterly thing, monetarily as the budgeting needs to be determined. Instead of asking exclusively for "open content", what you should be asking for is good budgeting towards FFXIV from SE (remember, this isn't their only game).
