
No its not garuda is currently the only viable pet option for SMN. I do not call this balanced at all.
But it doesn't help it either. If SE got rid of the pets and gave SMN Contagion, would it really change there gameplay? Probably not. And that's a big problem considering SMN's main mechanic is summoning pets.
On another note, I like both of your suggestions. Ifrit would benefit greatly from having a Haste versus Spike Damage and his cone-shaped Enkindle is awkward. (Adding to the list).


Wut. SMN is king of solo play precisely because they have summons. They're the only class I've played so far that can solo nearly every non-boss fate due to their ability to form an instant three-man party. Also, don't underestimate the ability to cut your enmity by 25% by giving that portion of aggro to your pet.
Also, I use all three pets in different areas of the game. Looking at the utility of a summon only from a Coil/EX/endgame standpoint is artificially limiting the versatility they have (imo).
