I remember YoshiP saying in an interview there was more open-world content coming. I specifically remember reading that things like treasure maps and beastmen dailies are just the beginning of stuff to do out int he zones. As it stands, there are currently reasons to head out into the world, just probably not reasons some people seem to find worth it.

    If you twist and turn..sure.

    FATES = A reason.
Dailies (which includes FATES) = A Reason
Running to get your teleports = A Reason
Going out to kill 5 marmots for a quest = A Reason.
Treasure Maps and Gathering = A reason.

People mean actual reasons for someone level 50, end-game reasons. FATEs serve you zero purpose at level 50 aside a handful of seals and maybe a 1gil minion or two.

I like doing dungeons with people and enjoying the mechanics. Having some reason to explore might be nice sometimes but I want to play an online game with friends and strangers, and quick-match ~20m challenges like dungeons and instanced elaborate raids I go on with friends is fun. It's a great system and there's a reason it won out over Everquest-style online RPGs like FFXI.

Conversely I'd rather see some of the open world stuff like Chocobos be used in instances somehow. I'd love special dungeon challenge modes that you go in solo or with a friend with your chocobos for a different and appropriate set of objectives and rewards. Stuff like tomestones, crafting materials/crystals, cosmetic items, pets, mounts, and fun toys along those lines.

Pretty much this, I was about to post something similar. There are plenty of reasons to go out into the world, sadly none of them are very REWARDING. The closest is Odin / Behemoth, I think those are a step in the right direction as far as FATEs are concerned. Other than that, there are about 7-8 other FATEs that can be deemed "rewarding" but that's only for a pet or an achievement. I'm honestly wondering why they don't make better use of that little purple circle thing that pops up during some quests, where when you enter it X monster pops per person that enters it. In all honesty, that would probably be the easiest and most fair way to introduce non zergfest NMs into the game (yes I mentioned NMs, read the whole sentence to understand that I'm not talking about making it a "claim bot" system where everyone who isn't in the party gets left behind). With that being said, there are tons of things that are already in the game that they could use to make the open world more valuable.

Edit: Expecting people to say something that will annoy me and in the end I will just ignore this thread because people can't seem to take the time to read, then think about what they read, and then respond.

I'm hopeful that this is a matter of priorities.
Patch 2.1 and 2.2 are really just completing the base game.
None of the additional kinds of things are in yet (Gold Saucer etc).

I believe this will be solved, but it's going to be more of a 3.x kind of thing
when this game really starts to shine.

The way I see it, there are some very easy ways to get end-game players out into the world. Aside from stealing Guild Wars 2's idea (scaling your stats/level to the zone's levels and putting a lot of crafting mats out there), there are many alternatives.

    - Make monsters drop more gil, specifically the higher leveled ones.
    - Make some challenging lvl 50 FATEs that don't spawn TOO often and reward a handful of tomes (not a lot obviously, maybe 20-30 tomes)
    - Make non instanced dungeons that are a decent length and have a powerful boss at the end which drops either a lot of gil, tomes, crafting mats, or ilvl70+ gear. After killing this boss you are not allowed to receive its drops for a couple hours, as a way to stop camping. Also, after killing it you are teleported back to the entrance.
    - Randomly generate a large buff in one of the areas in the world that's guarded by a group of lvl 50 monsters that only one party can get. Every couple hours an announcement comes across the server that says the buff has spawned in a new random area.
    - Using a dungeon's entrance point as the duty finder instead of the UI one will give you an increase to exp, gil, and MAYBE tomes.

This one is an idea that I just thought of and really actually like...
    - Create a patrol type quest between towns. If you talk to an NPC in Ul'Dah, for example, this NPC will ask you to travel to an NPC in Horizon (or any other area with an aetheryte) on foot/mount. Return and Teleport may NOT be used and if you use them while in progress of the quest, the quest is automatically abandoned. Speaking to the quest-end NPC results in a good reward (depending on the distance you had to travel) and a 24 hour lock on those two particular NPCs.

I'm chock full of ideas here, folks.

    .
This one reminded me of Eco-Warrior from XI, which I could see as a great addition if they brought back open-world dungeons like Shposhae, or if they expand existing areas like the beastmen strongholds.

Because its 2014 and people want things handed to them without working for it. Then cry "I don't have the time do such and such anymore but I can still spend 6+ hours a day to play"

Never gonna happen but just for fun....

Make every zone level 50 stat based. And every player starts off at level 1 with what is now level 50 stats and leveling up doesn't increase your stats. You level up to learn new abilities 1-50. and make enemy families difficult based on their monster families. A gobbue is big and strong and full of HP...so probably not a good solo target. Beastmen patrols can be soloed if you sleep or bind 2 of the 3 in the group and take them out one by one... or just bum rush them with some strong AoE move for their HP should be near what a player's HP is (job class considering for the beast men and the player) And overhaul all the gear in the game... like i said never gonna happen lol

You know make the world seem more alive? Why is a Golem in this zone so much weaker then the golem in that other zone? they both golems after all...hmm

I don't want to be judgmental, but that is probably the worst open world content idea I have ever seen. May as well have the trees uproot themselves and start dancing, just because... You know... OPEN WORLD #yoloswag
