It went "wrong" by innovating for each game, instead of giving us the same stale format a la Zelda, Mario, etc.

People claim they want game series to evolve over time, but when they do they throw a fit.

Edit: I'm not saying FFXIII was perfect, but it's also not worthy of nearly the amount of trash talk it gets.

When we say 'evolve' we don't mean change the things that make Final Fantasy into Final Fantasy. Extreme linearity and only allowing you to control one character in battle is not Final Fantasy. There weren't even any towns ffs.

Other than those things, I will admit that Final Fantasy 13 was not a terrible game. I understand that to some it's extremely good and then to others (like me) it's just a decent Final Fantasy. I'm not trying to start any hate here I'm just saying that the reasons you think we have for disliking Final Fantasy 13 aren't true. The battle system was very innovating (unfortunately only let us control 1 character), the story was good, the world was gorgeous, the voice acting was high quality, the music was... well it was okay, definitely nothing like the past Final Fantasy's music however, but again that's just a matter of opinion.
